Didn't get a letter and it didn't show on the irs site when I filed so guess I can go yell at the dealer if my return gets kicked back. Tomorrow will be a month since I filed and it hasn't moved to approved yet so we'll see.

While you're waiting for the return to be processed , continue communicating with the dealer that they can make retroactive reports of sales past the original 3 requirement, once that's done and the data reports to your IRS online information returns status summary screen, you will be a good position to appeal the rejection or possibly amend the return to include the details regarding your credit can now be validated.

We e-Filed Saturday and were rejected immediately with the "...no record of a vehicle purchase...". Called the dealer immediately and they input the report Monday (24th). E-filed tonight and the submission was accepted. The IRS.gov site still does not show that I purchased and EV yet so I don't know if this is a good sign or not. Maybe all late fillings have now been accepted? Not sure but I'll let the group know.

For reference, purchased the truck on 1/6/2024, Report filed on 3/24/2025. Second tax return (1st rejected) filed on 3/26/2025 and was accepted. Status of rebate, hopeful.

Tried to e-file in early March and it was rejected. Contacted the dealer who insists they filed the paperwork (probably didn’t) and sent me copies. Repeatedly rejected on e-file. So, I did a paper file with copies of everything. I guess I will know in September when they finally get around to my return…

Don't wait until September to find out your SOL and the dealer needs to report the sale. We don't know how long the IRS will accept late reporting. I'd push the dealer now and demand they give you IRS Form 15400 that is generated when the sale is properly reported. Go there and stand over their shoulder until they do it.

I made sure the dealer reported and gave me the form the day I bought it before I left.

I have the form, but there’s no guarantee they submitted it in the 3-day window. I sent them the link to npr story with a suggestion that if they missed that window this is their chance to redeem themselves.

The one they gave you originally was a fabrication, insist they do it correctly and generate an official report for your records, once that's in hand you'll need to wait for the final impact of your manually filed 1040 as to whether or not you got the credit, hopefully the background data posts to the IRP before your tax filing does and everything goes smoothly.

Either the form isn't the 15400, they photoshopped it, or put a false purchase/in service date. The system wouldn't let dealers report the sale if more than three days had passed. Look at your 15400 and see if all the information is correct and look up one and see what it's supposed to look like. If it's legit and everything on the form is correct your return should not have been rejected. Check for typos.

Everything on the form is correct but it’s just a form they filled out. Should they have a response from the IRS acknowledging receipt?

"fabrication"

A properly filed report generates a system 15400 that is printed for your records.

IF, by chance they did file correctly, they can review the submission and "VIEW" the report record and reprint it.

The Form 15400 is the IRS receipt. Look at it again, does it say Form 15400? The dealer doesn't "fill it out," they input all the information in the IRS portal and the IRS system generates the form.

What they sent me is their handwritten version. It’s pretty clear that they screwed up the process. It’s surprising that they haven’t figured that out because it’s a big dealership that sells a lot of cars. I have them working on it. Hopefully, they will sort it out.

See this - the IRS reopened the reporting portal for those dealers who missed the deadlines.

The option to report sales retroactively was opened for testing as of Tuesday, March 25, and will officially be rolled out today, the group said. "It is unclear how long the functionality will remain open but, according to the IRS, dealers can begin using the portal now," NADA informed dealers.
