Tonight I was playing around with Excel to make a charge time and cost calculator. I wanted to share it, should others find it useful.

There's probably a cool app or website to do this. Feel free to edit it and make it work for you such as customizing based on your battery size, cost per kW, etc. Also, our tax rate is 13% so you'll have to change that.

I'll take a look at yours when I get onto the right computer. I have one that I have used since day 1 that keeps more data than the Charge History in the Ford App. Note that I moved it over to a Google Sheet so I can access it from my phone - very handy when not charging at home!

Here is the summary lines at the top (we'll see if the formatting stays at least sort of useful when pasted into the forum):
Summary information

Doesn’t look like you’re accounting for charger losses. So you are slightly underestimating costs and charge time. Charge kWh and time will go up about 8 to 10% due to those losses. I.e, not all the energy makes it into the battery.

In my spreadsheet I enter actual charger kWh (wall kWh). This is what cost is based on and it accounts for charger losses.

You could increase cost and time by 8-10% for a better estimate.

I have been doing the same thing, only I have a FCSP so I record the Ford app reported energy added to the battery and the FCSP insight of how much energy was used.

In winter that includes the energy used for heating when the temps get to somewhere around 30F?

Every now and then the FCSP clears its data and I miss the actual energy used number.

I also include the mileage and miles per kWh calculation, then I can get a cost per mile number using the utility charge per kWh (including all the fees and taxes).

My cost per mile is between less than 1 4 cents per mile (mild temps in spring and fall) and 11 cents per mile (dead of winter). [Edited]

Compares favorably with our 2015 Prius hybrid cost per mile.

Damn, I wish I had your electric rates! At best, I'm at about your worst per mile.

Well our utility (Virginia Power) has an EV and Home plan I have been on since I got the 2012 Leaf, so overnight it used to be below 15 cents per kWh including fees and taxes, recently it crept up to 17 cents due to rising fuel costs so they (the bill) tells me.

This moth they announced another fuel cost increase is coming - an $8 surcharge per month.

And worst of all, they want to merge/be acquired by a Florida based utility which will likely result in even higher increases down the road based on that utility's history.

Virginia also has one of the highest number of data centers so there is a lot pf pressure to raise rates.

Don't it always seem to go that you don;t know what you've got 'til it's gone?

Alas...but still way better than driving an ICE vehicle! :)

That gap, less than 1 cent to 11 cents, makes no sense unless your winter rate is multiples higher...

Yes, typo on my part - I swear sometimes I spend more time correcting what I just typed than typing it in the first place...

Should have been less than 4 cents...and it was one of those weeks where all my driving was on flat 25mph surfaces in the Spring, when I got 3.8 mi/kWh (1kWh cost 15 cents). Maybe I had a tail wind as well? :)

Wow. Our rates don't swing that widely.

Some of you pay a lot for electricity. Here are the rate plans available where I am in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. These costs are in CAD also so in USD everything would be about 75% of these costs.

A lot of people with EVs here use the ULO plan as that means they can charge at $0.039CAD/kWh ($0.028USD/kWh) but those of us with solar and net metering sometimes stay on the TOU plan so that our excess solar generates credits at the peak rate. Some people also use batteries on the ULO plan to either avoid the On-Peak rates and also backfeed at that time in particular to generate the maximum credits.

thanks for posting this -- we're on London Hydro with the exact same ULO rate plan (Hydro One)-- really makes me want to look into BES (Battery Energy Storage) systems to truly capitalize on the ULO rates over night -- vs the $0.39 during peak times!

A lot of utilities will send you a spreadsheet of your historical usage so that you can see exactly how much you use at the different times. One trick I saw from someone else considering the ULO plan is that they scheduled their EV to charge based on the ULO schedule and after a month or two asked their utility for the hourly data and checked how much they were using during the ULO peak, and because they already changed the schedule of their EV charging they knew there wasn't any overlap.

yup, we charge both our EV's from 11PM onwards to make sure we're using the ULO rates. I want to charge a BES system up during the same time (11PM-7AM) and then run the house on it during the day :)
