Sunroof “mod” for hot climates maybe cold too?

Something I came up with earlier this summer and it has been working very well to reduce the heat in the cabin/keep in the cool!

I just measured the length I needed, the 48 inch width fits perfectly. I just laid it up there, the nice thing is if you want to take it down, you can just kind of roll it up stick it under the backseat or in the frunk or wherever.
If you wanted to get really intricate, you could create some kind of framing or support but this seems to work pretty well and will be easier to remove and put back in if and when I want to.

Makes one wonder if Ford will implement a reflective barrier onto the shade to help with the rays. Think I might give this one a try.

I use a similar product that was made to fit. Pretty much leave it up there year round. If I could have bought a lariat without a sunroof, I probably would have.

Lee has all sorts of testing and data about cold weather and the glass roof. Worth checking out his thread if you are considering the reflectix for your Lightning roof.

Lee does have this warning about summer use in the Mach-e:

WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE Reflextix in the window, remove by early March before the sun gets strong to avoid damaging the glass. WINTER USE ONLY. It is not necessary in the summer.

Apparently leaving the reflectix installed during hot summer months can cause the glass to crack.

I used an aftermarket sun shade year 'round in my Mach-e with the glass roof as I couldn't stand the sun in my eyes while driving and I didn't want to have to wear a baseball cap every time I drove during daylight hours. I don't know if a commercial sunshade exists for the Lightning or if there is one built in as I have a Pro trim with metal roof. If the Lightning glass actually opens (again, I am not familiar) than any type of shade may have issues. The Mach-e glass does not open.

Yes, the glass roof can open. That would make this sunshade material problematic unless you remove it. I can definitely feel the heat coming through the stock shade when it's sunny. Made me consider getting it tinted or something to help.

Volvo has a sunshade accessory for the EX90 that is very effective And easily installed and removed.

Perhaps @Ford Motor Company could provide something similar for the Mach E?

Ford does have a shade they sell at 2x the cost of the aftermarket options.

Be very careful with this. I personally have seen this crack the glass (Explorer). I’ve also see in a different application on a storefront it shatter glass. The heat is reflected and also not able to dissipate. Just be aware of this.

I used to use the sunroof all the time on my previous vehicle. most useful was when parking in the summer sun I would crack it open 4-6" or so so heat could escape. But this worked because I had a manual shade pull allowing me to cover the rest of the roof. However, I rarely use my Lariat sunroof as the shade portion is also automatic but will not allow you to open it partially. so full sun coming through the sunroof negates any advantage to opening the roof. That makes it pretty useless.

I used some of that reflective bubble wrap style before between the headliner and the roof of 90's model Grand Cherokee I had previously. Definitely cut down on the radiant heat and that stuff is pretty cheap. Attached an image of the old Jeep before I put the headliner back in.

On my truck, I have ceramic tint and it definitely makes a huge difference in this Texas heat. It doesn’t block absolutely all the heat, but it completely stops that feeling of being actively roasted, and the sun glare is cut down significantly. It blocks 99% of UV and a ton of the infrared energy. I went with LLumar IRX (35%) on the panoramic sunroof and all side/rear glass, and AIR 80 on the windshield. The A/C doesn't have to work nearly as hard to keep the cab comfortable now.
