$69 EV Registration Fee. Increases are annoying. What about your state?

I get the need to replace road funding monies, but they didn't institute fees on more fuel efficient vehicles, which have reduced the amount of gas tax dollars flowing into the states/feds far more than what EVs have done. They need to move to a completely different model for all vehicles and not just penalize EV and Hybrid owners.

Florida doesn't have an extra fee to register an EV...... Shush - Keep it to ourselves, and don't let DeSantis know.

I just renewed the registrations on both of our 2026 Tesla Model 's. Personalized plates were $61 each for the year which included the extra fee for personalized plates. Standard fee for cars over 3500 lbs is $32.50.

But our Ford Lighting was $161 because it is a truck, has a GVWR over 8000 lbs and has personalized plates.

Note that EV's still pay no Federal road taxes. That may change under the current Big-Oil funded congress. Several proposals are on the table: Some go far beyond what the average gas vehicle owner pays in federal road taxes (currently only $0.18 per gallon).

• Vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) tax: A VMT tax would charge drivers based on how many miles they travel, creating a direct link between road usage and taxes paid. Federal and state pilot programs are testing this approach, but administrative costs and privacy concerns remain issues."

I will be dinged for:
* Age of vehicle - because we have a 1.1% Regional Transit Authority tax (thanks voters!! /s) on the assessed value of the vehicle from the prior year (WA State dictates the stated value!). So if they say my Truck was worth 60k, I will pay $660 just in the RTA portion of my tabs.
* Base registration of $43.50
* Penalty for vehicle weight being over 6000lbs
* Penalty for EV $225 (150+75)

All in all, when I renew my tabs I expect it to be close to $950

Today, I registered our Tesla with the state of Colorado, and there seems to be an increase in EV-related fees. When I first registered an EV in 2020, it was a single $50 fee. This year, it's $69 divided between two fees. I understand that states traditionally use gasoline taxes to pay for roads and maintenance. My economics mind likes how the taxes on gas are efficiently applied; you drive more, use the roads more, buy more gas, and pay more taxes.

EV taxes are flat-rate, which is the most annoying part as a driver who doesn't drive a lot. Yes, I can afford it... and in Colorado we get a state tax break when we purchase an EV... but just let me complain ?

Here's Colorado's breakdown of registration fees for our 2020 Tesla Model 3. My new Lightning in 2024 rang in at an eye-watering $1213! Ironically, EV drivers still pay a fee for "Emissions" programs.

214.50 in NC. Annoying, and a little more than a person with a 25 mpg car would pay (in gas taxes) for 12,000 miles worth of gasoline. Probably not unreasonable, given that many of us are driving vehicles that are much heavier than average.

In my state, registration is 5x more expensive for an EV. They say it's for the roads since I don't use gas, but last I checked I pay taxes at Electrify America, Tesla, and to the electric company; none of which an ICE vehicle does but somehow it's my fault when the bean counters don't know how to do budget allocation.
