Well, another ice storm rolled through Southern Ontario so I thought about how to keep the ice out of the charging port. My old carpet floor mats were lying in the garage after I upgraded to TuxMats (really happy with those by the way), so with a spare paving stone to keep it in place I turned one into a charge port cover. Worked great- it’s rigid and heavy enough to withstand the ice and the soft carpet side won’t mar the paint. The thrifty Dutchman in me is pretty pleased with the result.

Ford has a purpose built rubber piece that blocks water/ice/snow while charging. I bought one and only used it once so far. It did the job.

I’m sure there are many options better than my homemade solution but it’s always satisfying to solve a problem with something that you already have lying around, right?

chip ice out of the dc pin flap to close it.
That happens regularly up here, the door hinge also collects ice and needs to be cleaned off occasionally.

In 3 years of ownership and into my 4th winter I've had to use a hairdryer only once to clean out the port.

Ordered one of these after having to chip ice out of the dc pin flap to close it. Reasonably priced so figured what the heck. Of course it's in the 70's now. :cwl:

Yep, same one I ordered after the sleet storms rolled thru Maryland. The item works well and Dan is a great guy to work with. I had tried multiple times to use our 60K+ Ford points to order the factory unit, but after multiple attempts on several occasions, I finally gave up.

Also, Dan developed a similar unit for my wife's Polestar that fits like a glove and works well. He also worked with me to recreate a couple of mounting brackets for a guard on my Land Rover. Great guy and I highly recommend him.

Nice homemade set up!

We had that snow and ice storm here in Northern Virginia that @Crosbo mentioned - I had my truck backed in the driveway near the garage so I could hook up the PPOB to the house, and I had to use a modified (hand notched) A2Z J1772 extension cable plugged into my FCSP CCS1 to reach the truck charge port.

I used a mid-sized plastic bag with zip ties for the charge port protection (where I also have a 12v battery maintainer hooked up),

and for the connection between the CCS1 and the J1772 I ran it up under the drivers side rear wheel and wrapped it with a plastic bag and zip ties as well.

For the PPOB I ran the generator cord up over the tail gate and under the tunneau cover (loosened a bit) then covered that with a tarp, held down with two bricks.

That all worked well to keep things protected from snow and ice and freezing rain.

We never had an electrical outage since I was so well prepared for one...

The hard part was digging out - the cables between the garage and the truck on the driveway were covered with 4-5 inches of snow and on top of that was 2-3 inched of ice.

Of course not! Had you not prepared, the power would have gone out.
