No matter where I put my hands on the steering wheel, with Cruise Control active I get the "Hands on Wheel" warning every 45 seconds. What am I doing wrong? The tradtional "10 and 2" does not work. No position works. I get rid of the message only by jerking the wheel slightly each time the warning displays.

I never notied this before because I've been using Blue Cruise for four years. Now that Ford's wants crazy money for Blue Cruise, I've started using Cruise Control. I am almost tempted to sign up for Blue Cruise just to solve this problem, but I cannot afford it.

Is there something I'm doing wrong to cause this?

Subtle counter pressure (rotational torque) on the steering occasionally will keep the adaptive cruise control happy.

Constant slight force on the steering wheel from either side and will stop you from getting that message. Some try to trick the system by wrapping a one pound ankle weight around one side of the steering wheel which I don’t recommend. I only bring it up to give you a comparison of what you must do with either hand. Place your elbow on the arm rest to the left or right and with your thumb and finger on one hand only, apply a slight constant downward pull on the steering wheel.

with Cruise Control
with ONLY cruise control on? Or with cruise + lane centering ("Co-Pilot Assist") also on?

With only adaptive cruise control and not lane centering you should not be getting any hands on wheel messages AFAIK. With lane centering on, yes my 22 Lariat also takes an absurd amount of torque input to sense my hand on the wheel. It is enough to disturb the suspension set of the truck, whether I put it in "sharply" or "smoothly". It does not sense low manual input torques well AT ALL.

This is my experience, it's tiring having to make sure there's enough downward pressure. It's often easier to cancel lane keep and maintain my sanity.

I'll try that again. I found that that approach did not work. I'll try again Friday on my trip back to Maine.

Button on the wheel, to right of the cancel button. It will automatically turn on every time you turn on cruise. It stays off if you use cancel/brake and resume.

You arent doing anything wrong its just a bad implementation of a steering wheel check that punishes you for having good alignment.

Once my BC ran out I got a comma4 and i never have this problem anymore.

There is a setting under cruise control that implies you can turn on cruise control without lane centering, but it lies. You have to turn it off manually every. single. time. you turn on cruise control. At least I have to in my truck. There is a button on the steering wheel for it.

Ford doesn't do software.

Oh! I forgot that existed. I used it a long time ago but discovered if you do that, it disabled hands free BC as well. Since I don't have BC anymore, I might try that again. Thanks for the reminder!
