Log onto your IRS ONLINE account and look for the 2024 report to confirm that they either reported a qualified sale that DID or DID NOT involve assignment of the credit to the dealer.

CHI, my experience was almost exactly the same as yours but on 1/5/24. Follow TaxmanHog advice here. When I checked mine yesterday I was very surprised my dealer entered the sale, my wife and I did not sign any IRS paperwork on 1/5/24. I am guessing that they digitally signed my name later to accomplish this. Of course the other surprise was that they did not transfer it to themselves.

Hmmm...I'll have to try that if I can get through the log in process, it may be complicated.

I had some ID theft back in the mid 2000's and it was quite a hassle to unravel, including having special ID's etc. for accessing and filing.

All my info is still on the "dark web" and now and then, someone tries to get a tax refund using my info. It was very easy back then, too easy.

All because some secretary at my life insurance company put a file sharing app on her office PC with full access to all files on the office server! And of course, my info, and a lot of other atty's info, was in an unencrypted word document, omg.

One of them was Supreme Court Justice Breyer!

I was gonna warn you about the possible body cavity search before you were granted access, it is a PIA for sure, but that's to ensure the security of your highly sensitive account information.

The section on this page to the right upper quadrant if viewed on a standard web browser screen. under the section header [Clean Vehicle Credit Information]

It might default to available 2024 reports, if none were recorded for 2024, only the option to expand the 2025 reports section.

I have not purchased any qualifying clean vehicles in 2024 so the section is not visible, and have not bought any in 2025 either.

If you're not seeing something along the lines of what @Dino and @21st Century Truck found, then at least the dealer did not /s/ on your behalf without your consent.

I suspect you're going to have problems, hopefully you discover a remedy, if the return is rejected or audited in the future, before filing, call the contact number listed on one of those screenshots for further guidance on how to remedy the situation when dealing with lazy & inept dealerships negligence in providing evidence of the seller's report being filed and your copy of the 15400.

Can you confirm. Dealer Discounts are not taxable where the IRA Tax Credit is taxable. So Dealer discounts come off the pre tax purchase price so discounts are NOT taxable. .

Rebates, [tax] Credits, Deposits are listed after all taxable charges are listed.

So If the $7.500 was listed as an additional deposit it was NOT PRICE discount. That makes it very likely that the dealer either took the tax credit or intended to take it.

Reporting that you passed the tax credit to the dealer at time of sale shouldn't create an issue for the buyer. It the dealer took the tax credit and the buyer doesn't report it when they file their return,, this could be an issue for the dealer.

With regard to state & local sales taxes, you pay on the price of product purchased, less if possible {based on state law} you may be able to reduce the sales taxable basis by the value given on a traded vehicle, otherwise additions like registration fees and runner fees, minus cash deposits minus federal clean vehicle credits do not affect (raise/lower) the sales taxable basis.

With regard to state and federal INCOME taxes, the value of a Clean Vehicle Credit, is not income to the individual, I'm not certain about income tax treatment to a dealer or lessor when it is transferred to them , I'll have to look that up, any CPA's on the thread want to chime in?

Got this letter from the IRS today and glad to get it.

The notice is a reminder that I bought a EV in 2024 and transferred the tax credit to the dealer. This is new for 2024 tax year.
It also shows the tax form that I need to file in order to report the transfer.

Keep an eye out in your mail for this if you bought your truck in 2024 and transferred tax credit to the dealer at point of sale.

I received the IRS letter stating that I signed the credit to the dealer. The dealer gave me the Clean Energy Credit tax letter so I can claim it on my taxes. So I guess I’ll need to respond to them.

Sounds like income to the dealer to me. He'll get check/ACH from IRS. Tax credit's for individuals aren't income, just manna from the tax gods. Retired CPA

Agreed, in lieu of a larger payment out of the check book of the buyer which is certainly income to the dealer, the credit transfer would also be income to the dealer as well.
