Keep hands on steering wheel warning

Yeah, there is no button for lane centering...that's a subfunction of the cruise control.

Lane keeping button when pressed *should* let you wander all over the place and not nag you about keeping your hands on the wheel. I just leave it turned on and jerk the wheel every ten seconds instead like a total spaz. (Thanks Ford!)

Why does everyone keep saying they have to jerk the wheel? Mine literally takes fingertip pressure to make the alert go away. Seriously, 80% of my driving is with the tips of my fingers on left hand. Making the alert go away is no more than flexing my thumb tip.

I think this is truck-dependent. I have to put way more pressure on the wheel than I should have to for it to recognize the hand on the wheel to the point I nearly have to nudge the truck off its straight course. My wife's MME is fingertip, and simply resting a finger on the wheel does the job. I expect the sensor that triggers the hand on the wheel may have been calibrated differently in different batches, hence the difference in experiences.

My ‘25 Lariat has started a new (to me) annoying behavior. While I’m driving manually — no Blue Cruise or any cruise control active — with both hands on the steering wheel, I’ll get the “Keep hands on steering wheel” warning message. Why?? I’m physically, actually driving the truck. Obviously, my hands are on the wheel.

I have been annoyed by this “feature“ as well. Does anyone know how the trick detects a lack of hands on the wheel? Does it use the blue cruise sensors? Or is it a sensor on the steering wheel itself?

It is looking for steering wheel movement. Sometimes called torque sensing.

I have to almost jerk mine to stop it from nagging also. It’s extremely annoying how much input I need to give my steering wheel, I drove an expedition limited and I barely had to touch the wheel to stop it from nagging.

I can see why this is a safety feature when you have BC that drops out of "Hands Free" mode from time to time, but it's just pure annoyance if your Lightning doesn't have BC. Also, the audible ping every time it drops lane centering (usually when you're passing an exit) is also annoying. I keep a little pressure to the left with my left hand (fight the lane centering a bit), to keep the message away. Just want lane centering without the BC safety features that aren't needed.
