I check my louvers after driving in the 40's and find they are open? This doesn't seem right. Seems they should always be closed during cold temps.

Update:
Thanks for the replies. After looking at my Mach e, seems it does the same thing. It opens the louvers when turned off also! I updated my vehicle descriptions too!

What year is your Lightning and MME? You might want to add those to your profile....

If you have heat pump models (newer model years), the louvers need to be open for the heat pump to to move the air across the heat exchanger to move the heat from the outside air into the cabin and battery heating system.

The same reason they're open in the summer, but in reverse... moving heat from the cabin and battery to the outside.

If you don't have a heat pump model, well then, I don't really know why, but I'm sure there's a good reason.

I hadn't even considered this to be a reason, but it makes sense. So under what circumstances would they be closed? Cabin climate off?

I've got a heat pump and when I have looked, I have seen the louvers open, closed, and anywhere in between. Don't really know why, heat pumps are still FM to me (freaking magic).

I'm pretty sure that the truck heating/cooling system for the motors and battery, etc. are actually heated and cooled by the heat pump. It was kind of a mind melt for me when I learned that. The heat pump, or the PTC heater and air conditioner compressor in the older models, are what is making the battery and mechanics of the truck the perfect temp based on battery SOC, load demand, ambient temp, and a host of other criteria. There is no water/antifreeze radiator like days of old.

As for the louvers being open or closed, my best guess is it's whatever the magic of the heat pump is asking for to create the most efficiency 🤷‍♂️

Probably still generating waste heat at those temps.

I've been curios about the louvre behaviours and would like to see a live view of them while driving in various temps.

Should be doable with car scanner.

The 2022 Ford F150 Lightning(PRO) front Auto SHUTTERS operate(open, close) automatically.... when the truck is OFF, the shutters typically are OPEN, in order to allow the fan and air flow over the cooling radiator for the BATTERY PACK, also while CHARGING, since HEAT is the main enemy of the battery. When the truck is in GEAR, the Shutters will CLOSE, creating better AERO for the truck, while in movement. The shutters operate almost the opposite of the typical ICE vehicle, since the cooling is not for WHILE the truck is being driven, but while their is NO air movement when it is parked, and CHARGING, which creates heat.

and, along similar lines:

The Auto Aero Dam just behind the front lower valance of the truck will deploy at about 45 mph, then reset back after speeds lower than 45... automatically : )
