EV specific variants.
Ya, marketing department strikes again.
I'm putting on some new tires next week, I just got a set of rovelo ridgetrak-at-2 lt275/60r20. Couldn't find the weight spec online but I'll post when I have them.

Clearly what they're doing is tightening up the tread pattern and using a thin, lightweight carcass. If I walk out to my truck right now and press on the Goodyear Territory HT sidewalls with my thumb, I can watch deflection happen at the tread blocks. That's how flimsy these "EV tires" are.

I think I'm going to either try the Pirelli XTM which has an "electric" stamping on it, or just forget about EV designation altogether and buy some Falken A/T4Ws again. Those tires are amazing and last forever.

I just ordered a set of 275/65r20 (34s) last night. Getting them installed next Saturday. Goodyear has a 20% off coupon on their website right now that pushed me over the edge. I originally wanted a set of the Toyo Open Country EV but they appear to be completely sold out across the country in the 275/65r20 size. These compared well to those but I admit they look slightly less cool. I'll post pictures here once I get them.

Oh nice. I just realized they have it in 34" too. That's a huge plus. 275/65 always ended up being predominantly LT tires

I do wish they didn't stamp electric drive in big font on the side.

If you can and interested, try to do a baseline efficiency before you put them on!

Totally agree. The side stamping is questionable. After I adjust for the sizing on forscan I'll be sure to report my efficiency numbers.

From what I've read about EV specific tires is they focus on ride quality (including noise reduction) and lower rolling resistance. Essentially marketing fodder to a point. So long as a tire meets speed and load equal ratings, any tire can be used safely.

The kicker with this is many places won't install just any tire on your machine, they have to appease insurance regs. Even if we know the previous to be true, they won't care and will force that more expensive tire on us.

Some of us that is, I do my own tire mounting and balancing at home. You'd be surprised how much a set of machines cost, check ebay. Paid less than 2k back in 2014.

I’m really happy with my Toyo EV tires one year in. They are wearing well, mileage is good. When I bought them, Discount tire asked my why I want to pay the extra for the EV compared to the Toyo standard. I could have save a couple of hundred on a set.

Regarding the "Don't Forget TPMS" label ... I assume there is a reason for that? 😂

A few weeks ago I spent 15 minutes untwisting, straightening and fitting Ethernet wires into an RJ45 connector, crimped it ... and noticed the strain relief boot laying on the floor.

LOL yep, I got the machines due to local tire shops wanting to install high speed rated tires on my wife's 2014 Escape. This is not the turbo charged model, just a regular old 4 banger that is also a city only driven vehicle. I told them I didn't need a speed rating of much more than 70mph, they argued I had to have the over 100mph speed rated tire or they wouldn't install them.

Problem solved.

When breaking down her tires, I forgot all about the tpms sensor and snapped it off, doh! Only made that mistake once but grabbed my label maker just in case. :bandit:

You spent $2k to solve a maybe $40 problem... Even the cheapest tires these days are T rated. L rated are 75mph . What is the letter designation for a 70mph tire?

The tire shop was right since the escape is capable of 100mph.

The numbers are arbitrary not exact. That's the 1st thing, the second thing is you don't throw the machines away after one use. I've put 3 sets of tires on that car in the last 100,000 miles and 2 sets on my old truck not to mention my sons car.

I also don't have to worry about tire goons and luber goobers gouging my wheels.

The machines have paid for themselves twice over already and get this, they still work! Imagine that.

You clearly have a use other than the 1 time.

$4k would take me installing 50 sets of tires ($20 a tire) to break even which I'll never do in a lifetime for personal vehicles. Hell I think even at even 25 sets I'll struggle to get there unless I track more. Even so many places just install them for free. Maybe you just have different math

Though I would never install lower rates tires, bringing a shop loose wheels solves that problem

Are you also blind or just selectively reading? I paid less than $2k and I do this kind of work for a living. I know full well what's what but thank you for your uneducated opinion.

Ok bud. Good talk. $2k is the only number you mentioned. How do I know the exact amount or care? As you said numbers are arbitrary.

How would I know you do it for a living? Your comment was about how you took a personal car to a shop. And solved your personal car problem with a new tool.

"Paid for itself twice over" . $2k*2=$4k. I'm just quoting you. Why are you crashing out like this?

Go relax! Unnecessary aggression on a Saturday morning. 👍

This thread isnt about a tire mounting machine!
