Recall king = Repair cost after warranty?

I was watching the following (not so flattering) post on Youtube. It sounds like it was put together by a pissed off fired Ford engineer who became a TESLA fanboy and had to make a hit piece to feel better but never the less, it did bring up a concern for me; Although except software updates and my screen going dead once, my truck has been rock solid, as I approach end of my warranty, I wonder how much of Ford recall track record translates to repair cost after warranty? Are they separate issues or related?

For those of you that have owned Fords before, can you share your experiences after warranty period? For the past 4 decades, the cost of repairs and ownership for my vehicles has been minimal but parts and labor cost for this thing are expected to be much higher than I am used to. I just want to have a better feel for what to expect.

To your question I don't think anyone knows the answer yet. With the issues we read about in this forum, I had no hesitation to buy my first extended service contract out to match the original 8 year battery warranty. There is just too many new electronic items even in my basic Pro SR that Ford has little long term experience with; combined with the high costs of any repair; I wanted protection for a longer term.

I bought the truck cheap, so adding $2400 wasn't a tough decision to have protection until May 2031.

Which warranty did you buy? PrimiumCARE? for how many miles? I see things like adaptive cruise , Engine, ..... that doe snot apply to my Pro. Makes me wonder if it covers everything that does not apply to me but not somethings that do and how much arguing I have to do with the dealer when stuff hit the fan. Have you ever used an extended warranty in the past? Do dealers translate it it the way they like? or it is headache free to get things fixed?

The Lightning is my first Ford...it's also the first extended warranty I have purchased...because of Ford's "reliability".

I bought the 10 year Premiumcare warrantee from Granger today so hopefully I won't have to worry about it till 2033. Although I waited a couple days too late as they discontinued the lower mileage versions as of October 1st. Now they start at 60K in mileage coverage. There is also a 35 dollar add on for lighting coverage which is a bit weird. It seemed prudent since I had a water leak below the windshield this summer that did $8500 in damage.

My ‘94 Explorer never had anything other than regular maintenance. I traded it for a ‘99 Explorer and it only had regular maintenance until the transmission failed around 160k miles. I traded it for a Fusion in 2009 that I still have. The Fusion had a couple of recalls for airbags and brake master cylinder and I had to replace a leaking coolant manifold and the serpentine belt and tensioner. I also had a ‘95 Ranger that I kept until 2019 and it never had any work done except for oil changes and tires. I had a 2018 F-150 that I traded for the Lightning and it only had one TSB done to fix an AC drain that backed up into the cab. So over a half million miles I basically had to replace one transmission and a couple of minor engine parts. Don’t ask me about the two Chevys I owned before the first Explorer.

That gives me hope. Extended warranty is like opposite of gambling in a casino. House always has the advantage. They looks at the risks and sell the warranty more than it costs them to pay for the repairs. If you buy a lot of Fords and you can afford the repairs, over long term, you are probably better off not getting the warranty. If you only buy one and can’t afford the risk, you probably should get it.

My car history is like yours but the opposite. My first car was a $300 Ford Fairmont. Transmission blew up on it within the first year. In one occasion my hood popped up while I was driving and I had a Jim Carrey moment driving with my head sticking out of side window. After that I stayed away from Fords and was mostly a GM guy. Very happy with most of them (one had transmission problem at 150K). This Truck is my first new vehicle. My GM cars were mostly problem free under 100K and EVs are suppose to be less complicated than ICE which is why I am contemplating not getting the extended warranty.
