Doesn't work like that, it works on flat rate time. That would be fair if they charged for their time. The thing is for a problem that has happened many times before I go for my diagnosis, I expect to be a database across U.S. and even Canada that as soon as the tech types the symptoms gives him the likely causes, hours of labor and parts needed. First few times when the problem is new the time it takes to diagnose may be 1 hour any time after that it should not take more than 10 minutes including the time of staff that make the appointment.
What ever a specific job takes according to a labor guide is how long it takes including diagnostic time. It's already in print.
The give on that is if the job calls for let's say 8hrs and the tech takes 20 hours, he still only gets paid 8hrs conversely if he does the job in 1 hour, he still gets paid 8hrs.
Labor rate is set by each shop the time is set by the book and applies to ALL shops.
SLTS, service labor time standards under warranty are worse. The main reason I left the dealership 21 years ago. Warranty paid me 8hrs for a job that took 24hrs. The kind of job I did all the time and am good at. Ford didn't care, they say they're only paying so many hours that's it regardless if it's fair or not.
