I might consider something like this but I would not be able to live with a 3d printed interior
Because molten plastic in tiny lines is not as sexy as molten plastic pushed into a cavity ?

Personally I don't care how it's made as long as it holds up over time and looks "stock" / oem.

Haha that is hilarious. However i drove a dodge in the past (before i had my lightning), it had a rotary dial and i hated it….as much as i hate the shifter in the lightning now.
Shifter=ice
dial/buttons=ev
I think in an ice, when you shift from park to drive or into reverse, there is a delay in the transmission, its gotta do its thing. So the process of “shifting” matches that delay.
In an ev, its now, its instant. So the shifter is just slowing the process down. A button or dial matches the speed of a motor, which is now…there is no delay
I have the rotary in my lightning now and cant tell you how much i like it better.

I hated pushbutton shifters in ICE because of the mechanical transmission delay - no delay on EVs. I prefer a push-button shifter in an EV. Less chance of error. Press the correct button - go the correct way. Don't spin to "P" when you really meant to stop at "R" and shear your parking pawl off (I haven't done it, but others have). No looking down at the shifter to make sure it ended up in the right gear while parking and backing up traffic.
Push & Go.

Sure pushbuttons like the old MOPARs or Ramblers. I liked those a lot especially when we adjusted the trans to slam shift instead of slip and slide to the next gear. I have no problem with the standard shifter you get. If you want it to last you have to be gentil move it one click at a time. As long as you do that and not take it from park or reverse in a fast move it should last a life time, otherwise you will wear it out quickly. I have watched my kids in the past with the rotary switches for fan control on AC just grab it and quickly turn it to HI and I would have to tell them to do it one click at a time just as my father taught me. I have never had any kind of a switch fail if operated correctly even on a 200k miles car.

Many shifters are just faulty. I agree with your careful, definitive movements to reduce wear and tear on mechanisms. In my case, the shifter had a burr or piece of crap from the manufacturing process that caught inside the mechanism in the first couple of weeks and it was evident by the jerky, crunchy movements it made. For a week or two, my detents didn't line up with my selector, and it needed to be jiggled around to get it to select the gear. It gave me trouble for the first month or so, and then just worked itself in. I cancelled my service call because it was going to take weeks for the part, and it had worked itself out by then. No problem in over 2 years now.

Note, I do have a rotary shifter on the shelf now, just in case it fails. I hope to never need it, but will fix it quickly if it does.
