The primary reason I sought out an EV was because of the sometimes reminders of the reasons we bought an EV just pop up and hit you in the head.

My wife has a 2017 Honda Pilot which is a great car and one that we use if trips are longer than one day away.

Before our 1800 mile trip last month I took it in to have oil changed and tires rotated and I let them change the oil filter at an outrageous price.

A call from them went over "3yr maintenance recommended services" I declined and said I would check it out when we got back.

The timing belt needs to be done regularly with these engines as it's an interference valve train and if the belt breaks it can destroy the engine. It's a pita job but you do the valve clearance check at the same time so 890$ for that is a little steep. New gaskets are required though.

Trans/gear case service is also good to do at the recommended interval. You can get the schedule from the honda website.

All vehicles need maintenance eventually but the simplicity of an ev allows for an overall easier schedule.

Post is pretty silly. First, much of the dealership recommendations don't match those in the manual.

Second, the dealerships do the same thing for EVs, recommend unnecessary and overpriced services.

An air filter change on the truck is $25 for an owner to do it, and well over $100 at some dealerships.

Does an EV require less maintenance? Yes. But still requires brake fluid changes, and dealerships will recommend battery terminal cleanings, cooling system flushes, etc.

Believe the 2017 Pilot timing belt recommendation is 100K miles, so 70K would be somewhat early. That said, whenever you choose to do the belt, a common practice is to proactively change out the water pump simultaneously, as the (significant) labor portion for that job is already covered under the belt work. The pump part cost itself is relatively small. In the bigger picture, dealerships as a group, do not tend to promote EV's in general, because fully half of their total revenues come from their service departments, and EV's are not the cash cows that ICE have been for them. Hybrids/ EREV's, however, do keep the owner chained to the dealer service network, requiring all the regular ICE maintenance services, which is logically part of legacy auto company motivation to promote EREV over EV.

I remember Nissan recommending a brake fluid change every year. I guess Nissan had to throw a bone to the dealers in place of oil changes.

I grew up in a carless household. Well, actually, we had an old SAAB 94 when I was very little, but my parents sold it in 1984 as my mum didn't drive and my dad worked 6 to 7 days a week on the farm (easy for him to ride a bike to as it was only a mile down the road). On a Dairy heardsman salary, we just couldn't afford to keep it running.

I grew up in rural East Anglia in the UK and my first car experiences I really remember were my Sister's old 1985 Austin Meastro. Most of the time she spent was fixing body panel rust, not maintenance. (rust, when the car was just 5 years old).

When I graduated from Music School in 2002, I ended up getting a job in a pretty rural part of the Uk and didn't have a license. For the first 4 months, I rode a bicycle 50-60 miles a day, pulling a massive trailer behind with instruments in. My first car was a company car that I never maintained because the music service did it, but my first car I owned was a 1965 Morris Minor, and then a 1961 Morris Minor Woodie hot rod.

I had to wrench turn on both, and on my first motorcycles, a LOT.

Adjusting valve clearances and replacing the head gasket.. oi do I not miss that all But yeah, $4,450 is WAY TOO MUCH.
