Walmart adding DCFC at a pretty good clip?

This is the second store near me that is adding DCFC one was completed a few months back. They started with the convenience store and fuel dispensers and are now adding DCFC in between the big store and the convenience store.

Permit applications have been spotted for many states. Az, Fl, Wa, Ok come to mind immediately.

Construction has also been spotted in AZ.

It takes time to get through permitting.

We could use them down here in the Big Easy. There are NO (0), zip, zilch, nada dcfc down here. None worth using any way, they're either broken or charge an outrageous price. Also none of the Tesla chargers are accepting non Tesla vehicles.

Makes no sense why a major tourist attraction city like we are to not have them for people coming in from out of state. I get by with my home FCSP and can drive 37 miles to the nearest Tesla supercharger that's "supposedly" compatible and there are no less than 5 Walmarts within 15 miles of my home. Make that make sense.

Might try asking your sweetheart of a Governor why. Just saying.

Well it sounds like you at least have some, hah. It will be very nice once they start putting them in areas like North Dakota or Northern MN/WI/MI areas. Those areas are basically deserts, or you have to drive 50 miles in the wrong direction.

I still wonder why Costco doesn't do this. Would make so much sense as their clientele would be more likely to have electric vehicles. Most of them also have gas stations and theres a bunch of space available around. Maybe if Walmart shows it's been good for business they will.

I have heard that Costco has started installing some, but I have not researched or verified this information!!

I would absolutely LOVE it if the Walmart in my town installed some level 3 chargers. That's a place I go to all the time anyhow, would make it convenient to get a full charge while grabbing groceries.

Texas has a law that you cannot buy directly from the manufacturer or even in one of the 30+/- showrooms that they have in the state but they still moved their headquarters here and built a massive Gigafactory in the Austin area, but you have to purchase the vehicle from out of state and have it shipped or you can pick it up out of state!

A quick Google search shows this is not correct.

In Texas, you can order it online and Tesla will deliver to your home from out of state.

In Louisiana, you can order online but YOU must take delivery out of state and then drive or ship it home.

Texas is less restrictive. You can sit on your sofa and your Tesla shows up. YOU (LA) would have to drive out of state. That reduces the possible population.

I suspect if you could find Tesla ownership ranked by state on a per capita basis, LA would be well below Texas.

That's an entirely different subject and on that note my next door neighbor has a Tesla and I see lots of them s all over the place here. Haven't seen any lightnings down here except mine.

They have several super chargers at one place close by they're not open to non Tesla vehicles, probably 20 or so.

You're wondering why Tesla hasn't invested in upgrading their network in your area. The answer is that it's very far down the list of Tesla ownership, so they're not going to invest new money there. The old Tesla SuperChargers work fine, just slower, if you own a Tesla.

Top reasons:

- The number of Tesla's, per capita, in your state is paltry compared to Texas (and nearly every other state in the country). Texas had the 3rd highest sales for any state in 2023.

On a per capital basis, Texas was 82,000 / 32 million = 0.26% of the population. Louisiana is 3,300 / 4.6 million = 0.07%. Of course what matters is Tesla ownership, in total, per driving population, but I couldn't find that.

The comparison isn't to Lightnings, it's to all non-Teslas that are authorized to use Tesla SuperChargers, which includes Ford, KIA, Rivian, GM, Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, Lucid, Mercedes, Hyundai, Honda, ... But Tesla can make lots more money in other states by upgrading chargers. There are many areas of the country where they haven't upgraded chargers.

DC Fast Charging is intended to be for traveling. Yes, a destination does need charging to attract tourists (if you want them to drive their EV there), but that's on the destination to put things in place to encourage charging.

New Orleans has a wealth of slow charging via J-1772. Lots and lots. They also have a bunch of fast charging locations with one or two chargers.

On the approach to New Orleans, Tesla has the routes covered. Baton Rouge, Gonzales, Pass Christian, Pearl River, Covington. Charge to 80% (or higher), drive 60 or less miles, and you're there. 80% ends with 50% upon arrival. Park and don't use the vehicle, plenty of charge to get back to same charger. Or, charge at one of the hotel chargers, or at a car dealership for less than 30 minutes.

So, in short, there's no business case for Tesla to spend money to upgrade their chargers in New Orleans, as compared to lots of more justifiable locations.
