Will You be upgrading to the Lightning EREV?

Will You be upgrading to the Lightning EREV?

  • Yes - The Lightning EREV range extender will be useful

  • No - The current Lightning provides sufficient range/capabilities for long term ownership

  • Unsure - Will have to see the final Lightning EREV specs/pricing

  • Other - Will leave the Lightning for something different (other brand EV truck, gas F-150 etc...)

Curious to quantify what other Lightning owners are thinking...

If they can manage to place the onboard generator under the rear bed of the truck and not consume the frunk AND they allow drivers to turn off the onboard generator when not needed then in my opinion it’s at least worth a look. Scout motors placed their generator underneath the rear, so we know it’s at least possible.

Literally at Chevy dealer right now. Thinking of trading in my 23 lightning lariat (which I love) for a Silverado ev. Not sure on fence still. Will take heavy loss on trade in. However I am Very concerned about support. Based on what I’ve read here some dealerships refused to or couldn’t service these trucks when they were in production. I have no faith ford will do the right thing for its customers.

People who own an ev know an extender is a joke, people who dont own an ev are scared to drive to store without gas backup.

I have a range extender for towing long distances - it’s called a Diesel. It will last forever now that all the “daily” driving is done with the Lightning. Win/Win.

I picked other. Reason being I have lost faith in Ford, but not because they have cancelled the lightning.

An EREV would be nice if they can keep the cost down, which we know won't be the case.

I had to haul a generator to the ski hill twice a week so I have enough safety margin to get home in bad weather (300km round trip). Not to mention the 2 weeks a year when I camp 200+km away from the closest fast charger and relies on buddy's powerboost to charge me up.

What I really wish for is a detachable generator that integrates into trucks control, and can supply/argument battery power WHILE driving or parked. It doesn't have to be a big V6, just 10-20kw and extend the range enough so that I can drive the truck all day.

Honestly, I understand the business decision to go this way. Unfortunately, it will likely mean the first and last Ford purchase for me. I will never go back to having an internal combustion engine under the hood of my vehicle. In this case, I feel particularly naive to have believed that Ford would support their BEV trucks longer than 3 years. I have a 2022, and I planned to drive it for 10+ years. Now I don't know if I will risk it.

The population we're polling is already pretty biased. We already believe in the Lightning.

I acknowledge Ford reached a limit on who was interested in the BEV Lightning.

We are a minority.

Ford needs to sell to the majority to grow business.

Imagined hang ups over range are still real barriers.

I've already journeyed to places with really sparse EV charging. 1 DC charger in town kind of places. I've been able to go to places I've wanted to go.

I don't forsee changing my Lightning in the next decade at least. The technology and cost won't be there until 10-15 years from now. A used Scout or used Kia truck EV are the only ones I would consider vaguely that have been announced.

Time matters. Selling today because of this decision is silly. Not buying another Ford WHEN a vehicle is replaced could be a year or 3 or 5 or 10 for some.

We will likely replace a vehicle in 6 to 18 months. It won't be a Ford at this point.

That said, Mach-E is 3.5 years old with 31,400 whereas truck is 2.5 years old with 16,800. Mach-E would be replaced first.

Honestly the existing Lightning ER is pretty damn good. If I had a wish list of improvements it would be pretty short and will likely not be part of the EREV.

1. 300KW+ DCFC
2. Better underbody aero for improved highway efficiency.
3. Better software and reporting (why are charge time and departure times still broken FFS!)
4. 12KW PPOB
5. A stereo with better dynamic range and upgraded ability. The sub and rear sound stage of the 8 Speaker B&O is terrible.

Hopefully the EREV is just an SR Lightning with a generator. That would make continued development possible and open the door for the return of a BEV Lightning.

Perhaps. Mine will need replacement sooner or later. Based on my current mileage and driving habits, that will likely be sometime in the 2028 - 2030 window. It may have even been sooner if something really got me excited.

Historically people often buy a new F-150 to replace their older F-150 when the time comes. Until yesterday, I was in that camp as I planned to replace my current Lightning with the T3 when the time came, barring some as yet unknown and significantly better option.

That is no longer the case, and I have no interest in a midsize Ford BEV pickup nor the EREV Lightning.
