Bummer.
I have used Safelite in the past with other vehicles with no problems.
Sometimes there was no charge to me because...

Some insurance has full glass coverage with a low or no deductible.

There may be a difference if it broke due to an accident or a rock on the road.

But if it was a rock that fell off a dump truck for example, and you got the license plate number, you could report that to insurance and they'd try to collect from the company or owner, if they are insured of course, otherwise, sue or let it go.

I have a $500 deductible comprehensive policy.
Unfortunately, the hit and run driver who trashed my driver's side mirror was uninsured and left the state after the accident, so I was out the deductible. Yes, it was a $700 total cost for the replacement...lots of electronics in those mirrors. If it had been the passenger side it would have been worse - the parts guy told me that one costs $1100 from Ford!

It would cost me more in time and trouble to sue the guy...so c'est la vie.
Hey Chris - I always get a chuckle seeing your icon!! Thanks for responding.

So very appreciative of all the replies. Absolutely no rush to get the windshield replaced & just maybe that will be a repair that won't get made. There is no shame in riding around with a crack in the windshield!!
The windshield is part of your safety restraint system as well as part of the structure of the vehicle. In many vehicles, it helps with the deployment of the passenger side airbag. Also, some OEMs require a specific windshield adhesive because of this. Volvo is a prime example.

LOL Thanks.

Yes no shame, and sometimes the experts can fill the crack with a clear goop of some sort, if it hasn't gotten too big - I tried doing that with a chip once, but the DIY method failed.

As for the icon - I actually did that with a butter knife when I was about 4 years old and got a shock.

And, in true scientific method fashion, I did it another time to see if it was repeatable - it was.

I used to have that picture posted on a certain social media site - then after it had been there for probably 10 years, all of a sudden they take it down and tell me it violates their policy because it promotes suicide or some such nincompoop nonsense.

When I was that age, I even had the same hair color, and it looks a bit like me - I don't think my dad took that picture though during my experiment.

My dad was a Presbyterian Minister and somehow they got me to be in a holiday pageant - probably promised me candy if I was good, a rare thing - you know what they say about preacher's kids, lol.

Of course I grew up to be an electrical engineer...and patent attorney because that paid better usually.

Channeling my native American heritage (6th great-grandmother was Unami (Turtle) Lenni Lenape "Original People" born in 1706 in the vicinity of what is now Delaware) before my mom took away my weapons, alas.

I had the same concern as my windshield has the same banding so I took it to the dealership, they did have to order the windshield but when it came time to install it Safelite arrived at the dealer and performed the installation! 😅 Guess like most things everyone orders the same parts from the same limited number of places, next time I’ll just go thru Safelite and ask for the OEM replacement.

Having to get mine replaced now. Looks like I had a small chip near the top, in that tinted area that I didn't know about. With the hot temps, I now have a 8-10 inch crack. Scheduled with Safelite through insurance (Progressive). When I asked about using an OEM windshield, I'm told I have to eat the cost for it, around $450. Is it worth that to make them use OEM?

OEM is SoundScreen. They need to replace like for like.

Mine got some big chips on my recent trip. I filed my claim on the trip, then messaged the claim handler to see if should seek out chip repair in Canada, and how much they'd approve. She said "if you want, and no limit. Or, just wait until you get home and get a new windshield."

I have zero deductible glass coverage.

The rep I talked to just said they use high quality "like" replacements and that my plan would not cover the expense for OEM. Dunno if it's just a Ford thing, we had USAA prior and I think that paid full price for OEM for the Volvo when it suffered a similar fate. We switched as the premium was getting ridiculous but this is going to eat into that savings now (assuming USAA would've paid for OEM). :( I told them to do it but was having second thoughts.

That's the difference between a high quality company like USAA/AMICA/Erie Insurance and Progressive.

When I have replacements done, I call Safelite to make sure they're bringing OEM, and they always do.

There is no shame in riding around with a crack in the windshield!!
Except that it is structural element and part of the vehicle's safety systems. A chip is one thing but a crack is something else. A crack will only grow and it can't be stopped. Shame and safety are two different things.

if you love how quiet the cabin is stick with the OEM SoundScreen because it is an acoustic windshield. An acoustic windshield is not the same thing as an ordinary windshield. The two have different properties and are not made the same way. I am not sure if the safelite product has the same specifications.

Not the windshield, but the driver's side window got hit on the freeway leaving Tucson last Sunday. Started as a small chip with three cracks all less than 1 cm long. Within a couple hours one was about 4 inches (to the top of the window), and another was about 3 inches (now about 5 inches). I'm tied up this week with a race so have not done anything about it yet, but will do so in the next couple days. It's annoying because it's right at eye height.

AAA (others too probably) sells add on glass coverage on top for like $100-200 a year. I don’t remember the price exactly. And with the OEM endorsement policy, it extends to the glass coverage. I feel OEM endorsement is a must for newer cars.
