Tried my new adapter out at a hotel near by with Tesla brand chargers. They had 2, in nice shape, good parking and after starting ford pass app, it started right up. I got a nice 10kw on a 74% SOC. The quality of the charger was nice too. I assume with this test run I should be able to access similar destination chargers too.

You’ll be able to use all of the ones that are free. There’s supposedly a couple out there that are locked down but I haven’t ran into them yet.

The charge rates will vary as they’re controllable. You can get an only 3-4kW if they turned it down or you can get 19kW if you find one that’s turned up but generally you’ll be able to use them.

Be prepared for the occasional nasty note from a Tesla owner.

As long as you move as soon as it's done charging you should be fine.
The Tesla peeps are going to have to get used to everyone else using the Tesla chargers.
The ones with multiples are usually fine. I have gotten a couple of notes. 1 from a single station, the second with a J1772 next to it but the J17772 was outputting 32A and the Tesla was outputting 80A. Active charging both times.

What on earth do they say? "Please stop using our chargers? They're not for you?" The amount of entitlement from some people...
One was - this spot is reserved for EVs - don’t think they realized I was one. The other was more nasty - “These chargers are for TESLAS”

A couple things to remember if you are relying on a Tesla destination charger. The Lightning will not charge on a Gen 1 destination charger if it is set to 80 amps. Found this out at the Hampton Inn at Sheridan, WY. Not sure why as Rivians can charge on them just fine. Gen 2 destinations chargers work at 80 amps I've read.

The power can be halved if more than one vehicle is charging. Found this out the hard way last week at the Heartland Inn and Suites in Wheatland, WY. Arrived at about 9 pm and plugged in getting 8kw charging. Other three chargers were vacant. Truck said it would be at 80% by 4:00 am. Perfect. Woke up at 5 am and saw on the Fordpass app that we were only at 54% SOC and pulling 3kw. I looked out the window and saw a Model X plugged in. Luckily at 8:00 the model X went over to the Superchargers on the other side of the parking lot to charge to 100%. We were back at 8kw.

By 9:00 am we had enough juice to make Cheyenne. Had we been headed North to Casper we would have been in a world of hurt. This cost us 3 hours (difference between getting home at Midnight vs 3 am)

Some destinations chargers are set in Tesla Only mode. If that's the case you will want the TeslaTap which has a chip which tricks the charger into thinking you have a Tesla. The 80a import version also has this chip and will save you some cash. $189.95 on Amazon.

Can you clarify?

I’ve charged on Gen1s and Gen2s, on my Lightning without any issues using the Teslatap (and Lectron on the Rivian) The ones I’ve used are NACS, I haven’t used a J1772 Tesla destination charger.

As far as I can recall I’ve never run into a “Tesla mode” only charger or had restrictions with a Gen1

The Gen 1 chargers at the Sheridan Hamption Inn are NACS wired and set for 80 amps. The Lightning has no problem on Gen 1 if it is set below 80 amps. There is a Reddit thread on this issue. I emailed the manager of the Hampton Inn the info and asked if he could lower the amps on the Charger and didn't get a reply.

Initially I assumed the charger was set in Tesla Only mode and returned my cheap adapter and bought the Tesla Tap 80a. The next time I went through Sheridan I stopped to try it and no luck. It really sucks because being able to use these chargers would really help with going across I-90. We would stay the night in Sheridan and be good to go.

I think it's rare for destination chargers to be on 100a circuits ($$$) which is probably why you haven't encountered any issues.

Not sure why the Lightning has no issues with Gen 2 at 80 amps.

Interesting, could’ve sworn the 80A at the Aloft hotel in Raleigh NC was a Gen 1. Will need to confirm next time.

In Toronto I had to park like this to access the Tesla destination charger but confirmed in advance with the hotel concierge that I was good to leave it like this overnight lol. SO nice to be 100% charged by morning just like at home. Really worth seeking out when traveling to see if level 2 charger is available.

I bought an 80 amp Tesla to J1772 adapter about six months ago and have been surprised by how many times I’ve used it. There are many hotels/motel properties that have installed Tesla destination chargers, but not J1772s. Even in cases where there is a J1772 charger, I will usually opt for the Tesla box because it is running at a higher rate. And with AC charging, I am more inclined to take the SOC to 100% before departure because it is gentler on the battery than DCFC.

Back in the day there was rumor that Ford was going to provide adapters for "early adopters" of Ford EV solutions. I presume that dream is dead and I should start shopping for one if I am ever to take advantage of the expanded Ford charging network?
