I need a walk behind and the ones I've seen are rotary, My gas rotary mowers never cut St. Augustine low enough for me. Funny thing is I used to have Tall Fescue until my neighbor plant Augustine, Then I had Augustine. That stuff will grown on concrete.
I was thinking of swithcing my push mower to electric soon and was surprised you said this. I would assume an electric mower would have more torque to handle the toughest grass. I thought the only thing to worry about was range. You say that the electric ones are all rotary. Mower tech isn't one of the things I follow. What other types of mowers are there other than rotary (which I assume means spinning blade)? I guess there is a lot more to switching than I thought.

Last week my dealer dropped off a brand new 2025 Ford Explorer loaner with only 200 miles on it in my driveway when they picked up my Lightning for service.. I drove it less than a mile the first day and parked it. Nice car but the sewing machine vibration and sound of the engine doesn’t do anything for me.

Fortunately we also have another EV, a Tesla Model Y. The Tesla gets 4.3 mi/kWh or about 3 cents/mile, around town. The Lightning costs about 6 cents per mile to feed when driving locally. The loaner would cost 4x as much to run with for gas than the Tesla on electrons.

Been super happy with the EGo line, especially the string trimmer, but push mower and leaf blower work well too.

We’ve had a Ryobai 40V walk behind mower for several years and the 55ā€ 24 hp lawn tractor only gets used occasionally for the backyard big stuff. BE weed whacker, chain saw, hedge trimmer, all compatible batteries. I too have about 10 gallons on hand for the pressure washer, lawn tractor but rare gas visits. 2-stroke chain saws (Husky, Pioneer, Homelite) that feel like antiques. The truck and an extension cord are also outstandingly perfect at running serious electric chainsaws, concrete mixers, wood splitters for all day work.

I have slowly gone electric in the yard with mainly EGO. Gas small engines are major polluters but that's not the main reason I did it. The oil changes, carb repairs, gas mixing, storage etc. were the major reasons. I can kill 2 5AH batteries with the chain saw. (before my 79 years run out of gas) One battery will kill me with the weed eater and 2.5AH is plenty for the Leaf blower. They all work well.

The mower is a 42 inch 0 turn and came with 4 10AH batteries. It's supposed to cut 1.5 acres. I cut 1.3 acres and when new I could barely do it with the 4 batteries. After 3 years, I can't. I now use 4 10 AH and 2 5AH in the mower and normally charge once during a cut. It's a pleasure to mow with it but the quiet is overrated. Blade noise is certainly less than an ICE mower but not as much as you would think.

I haven't done it yet but the Lightning will make it possible to load it all up on the car hauler and go to places that have no electricity and charge from the truck.

For the geeks, the EGO system is 56V so 10AH is 560 watts. The Lightning Flash would charge about 215 of those batteries?!

Between my motorcycle and tractor, I’m still at the pump all the time. Not going to give up either of those anytime soon.

I do have an electric blower and weedeater though. šŸ˜Ž

I bought a dewalt 20v trimmer 2 years ago and it's fantastic for the house. I still have a bunch of gas powered equipment but I'm slowly switching over. The boat motors will be the last to go but I can't wait.

I need a walk behind
There's 100 brands available now, surely you can find one that cuts your lawn. Do you need a reel mower?

I stopped at the gas station yesterday to fill up some cans and went to pay inside. When I came out there was a guy behind me with a slightly confused look until he noticed the cans.

I sympathize, my 80 year-old Ford 9N still kicking!

I had a four cycle Ryobi weed eater that died probably 10 years ago so I decided to go with the 40V electric one as a replacement and it was great not having to worry about changing the oil or putting in gas and priming it and trying to get it started (10 to 20 pulls)! with the battery powered one you just put the battery in and pull the trigger and go. A couple years later, I found a Ryobi self-propelled lawnmower that used the same batteries from a local auction that was brand new open box and I never looked back. I found a compatible blower on clearance at Home Depot a year or two after that. There is a Ryobi outlet over near Fort Worth (maybe Southlake) you can buy compatible equipment or extra batteries much cheaper than the big boxes.

I would’ve thought more torque as well, but my Ryobi 40V mower seems to bog down in deep grass more than my old Honda gas mower!
It seems to be more when I am mulching and it doesn’t really have mulching blades so that could be the culprit as well?? Other than that I absolutely love it, It is super lightweight compared to gas so it is much easier to maneuver.

I still go to the pump
For the mustang and my riding mower. But my push mower, leaf blower, and trimmer are all Ego and I love them. Just did the tune up on my riding mower today and couldn’t find the adapter to drain the oil so made a massive mess. Gonna start looking at the Ego rider now. I hate the maintenance on the rider such a pain

Sounds like the 56V Ego is the way to go. Almost 50% more Volts than the 40V's out there. I am just starting to look into this and definitely need to do more research. Unless its just marketing speak, I am assuming the extra volts gives it a bit more torque that allows you to mow a bit longer grass. I was looking at the Stihl lineup because I've had some of their gas powered stuff and really liked it but their website explains everything except for the voltage of the batteries. To me that means, it don't compete. Thanks for the replies everyone.

A few things about my 40V Ryobi which was a floor model languishing end of ā€˜22 season advertised ā€œdiscountā€ and negotiated w/floor manager for ~$145 w/battery. Amazing unit.
  1. I mulch mow.
  2. Keep blades tomato sharp
  3. Run the cut 1ā€ or so higher than ā€œnormal.
  4. Keep deck under side clean which means;
  5. No mowing damp grass.
  6. Two batteries.

I have a Makita mower, leaf blower, weed eater, and chainsaw. All have a decent amount of torque and thats using the batteries that also use on the drill. I imagine Ego, Stihl, and the others who have designed their products to be even better.
Oh, also, I’m in FL and have St Augustine grass, though my lawn isn’t perfect, so there’s also a good amount of other strains that I don’t care about - survival of the fittest.
