Upgrade just for the bigger battery?

Keep in mind that the OP is towing a pop-up camper, not a 30ft 2 axel toy hauler. In my XLT ER, I get 1.7 m/kw on average pulling a hard sided Trailmanor pop-up camper which mirrors what others have seen towing popups. That gives a SR a 135ish mile range leaving a 20% charge buffer. An ER gets about 180 miles of range in the same circumstance. Is 45 extra miles per charge worth the hassle and expense? Probably not for someone who camps only a handful of times a year.

Except the 2025s are 123 kwh batteries and not 131 kwh. So 167 miles using 100% to 20%, instead of 180 miles

With tax incentives going away I started toying with the idea of trading out my 23 XLT SR (purchased new 4/24) for a 25 Flash ER. Other than the battery, the Flash adds nothing of any value to me. I don’t drive a much, with only 11k miles, and almost never DC charger but a couple times a year, so my SR battery has never been a concern even in winter. However my in-laws are looking to offload a pop up camper and offered it to us for free. If we take it on and become a semi frequent tower, the ER obviously would make more sense. So I had the day off and popped in 2 different local dealers just to see what they had to offer.

The one problem is I’m not even 18 months into my 72 month XLT loan so I owe 41K and it’s valued maybe mid 30s. Both dealers priced out the same truck, both came back at 0% with slightly different discounts added. One offer was 986/mo the other 969/mo after I pinned the first offer on them.

Either offer the payment will be just slightly more than my current payment, but adding on 30k in additional debt and resetting my 72months. Of course I could drop more cash but no point if 0%.

So the question is now do I take the deal now with the tax credit just for easier towing or just roll with my SR since I really do love the truck as is. Or maybe there is more room to haggle, but I’m not so sure since I’m upside down and they let me walk reasonably easy compared to previous buying experiences.

Forgot about that. Mine is a 2023 XLT ER with the 131kwh battery. Sounds sucks that they dropped the battery size on the 2025 Flashes.

There are actually a few 2025 Flash around with the 131 kwh battery that were manufactured early in the year, but not many. I know where one is, and a close friend bought another 2 weeks ago. No I'm not telling where the one I know about is located, as I'm not going to help that dealer that tried to screw me over.

As for the OP, if you really want the 131 kwh battery, look at used 23s or 24s. Much lower difference in trade vs sale pric, so lower debt, and lower sales tax to be paid. I might do this at some point to get a ER Lariat. Brandon Flasch YouTube channel bought one with 54K miles, and has b and n great for him. Just check Carfax etc for past problems.

I agree with Scoobybri, I have a trailmanor trailer and a SR Pro and don't really have any issues towing. I charge to full before I leave and then just find chargers along the way. I average around 1.7-1.8 m/kw when I tow, and if your popup is smaller and lighter then you would do even better. As long as you plan out your charging stops a little it's really no big deal.

Thanks everyone, great suggestions here. I shopped it around pretty thoroughly and I can’t make the numbers work the way I want them to right now. New or used. I’m happy with my truck and already put a lot of effort into adding adaptive cruise and lane centering, rotary dial, etc, so I’m going to refi at 1% lower on shorter terms and maybe revisit next year after some experimenting with the pop up.

Ame. Just can't make the numbers work to where I want them, and then it's just not worth the extra debt for what you get especially with the smaller battery now in the flash.

I don’t think you should upgrade; too much money for too little extra range. I would gladly make a few extra charging stops to save several thousand dollars.

I tend to agree with this , it’s only a pop up camper it should add too much drag behind you . Give it a shot , since the vehicle works well for everything else you do , and you only have. 11 l on it your taking a bath on it and right now the dealers aren’t giving the discount they were just a few months ago . Everyone’s in a panic to buy now and the dealers are cashing I

You may want to thoroughly question your dealer about the 30D $7500 tax incentive and the eligibility for the 2025 Flash. The attached screenshots were shared earlier today in the Facebook Ford F-150 Lightning Owners Group.

From my understanding (which could be flawed), 2025 mid-range (Flash) and extended-range (Lariat and Platinum) no longer qualify for the 30D incentive.

I just wanted to give you a heads up in case this were a factor in your decision making.
