Which 80 amp charger is best?

My FCSP is set to 80A and has been serving us well for almost 3 years now.

We are still debating if we're going to buy a plugin hybrid or just go electric for my girlfriend. I think we're leaning towards EV. If we get another EV, I will probably install another charger instead of trying to share the FCSP.

Model year 2022 or 2023 any trim... You have 80 amp charging.

Model year 2024 or 2025 you need to check your window sticker, but you probably don't have it. Only a small chance that you do.

Yeah. SR and the 123kWh are all single charger. All 22/23 ERs came with dual chargers and 24/25 had to be fleet ordered pro/flash that specifically were optioned with the ER battery and dual chargers.

You are correct, my error. Dual charger in 22-23 ER's only.

I recommend emporia. They are priced well and if you get their refurbished units they carry the same full warranty that new ones do. The app interface is really nice and you can have multiple chargers on it. I have 2 chargers on my app. You can change amperage right in the app and set up schedules etc.

I second this. Buy direct from Emporia on their website. They have refurbished units and they were cheapest I found anywhere online. I really like mine and the app. I also have an Energy monitor in my main panel and a few smart 120v outlets that all interface through that same app.

Yep. Same! I have the monitor for my house and also in my rv. I use it for work so in it a fair amount.

If you plug an 80A charger into a car that only accepts 48A, the charger doesn't "work half as hard." It simply passes 48A through. The internal components aren't cruising; they are just performing at the car's max request.

Installing an 80amp charger is overkill and not necessary

If you’re planning on using multiple chargers, I use Altel, which lets you switch between chargers through the app. We use it for load sharing between my wife’s car and the lighting, and we’ve never needed more than 48 amps.

I'd rather have an 80a charger over a 48 in the fact it's only going to use half what it's capable of rather than stressing it to full output.

Might just last a little longer.

Keep in mind that the wall box is not a charger, it is a 240Vac voltage pass-through called Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). The chargers are internal to the truck.

48Amp at 100% duty cycle is how the EVSE is designed. Nothing to wear out really - fancy electrical contactor and some voltage/current/power monitoring electronics for WiFi enabled units that talk to your mobile app, etc.
