is it just me...or doesn't it look like a smaller f150 on paper?

By that, I mean it has similar speed (slightly faster/more power), similar range as the ER...and the starting price is low by all estimates, so I expect it to be priced similar spec to spec (that is, to get the top range and speed comparably to an ER lightning, you're easily looking at $65k-$70k+...so you're in similar territory as the lowest priced ERs, which have tons more room and capability for "truck stuff" (but Rivian is obviously better off-road).

I get the appeal, but I think the lightning...especially used, are better deals if you want just a little more room and space.

...and I say that as someone who wanted an R1T/R1S instead of the lightning but couldn't swing it comfortably as my third car haha

I'm all in on EVs and am grateful that there are some OEMs that are putting out new vehicles, but I've never been excited about the R2. It's just a small CUV that attract the wrong kind of drivers - the type that are attracted to Toyota Rav4s and Honda CRVs 🤮.

With Rivian I'm more interested in the R1S (with the charge port moved to the left-rear) and the R3X.

Rav4 is the number one selling vehicle in the USA. It's why Ford says the new EV they are building has more interior room than a Rav4.

If you were running a car company to make a profit, would you build to the most popular car in America?

I really want Rivian to succeed. We need more EVs with software that works. However I am really curious if they could not make R1 profitable, how will they make R2 at $45K profitable. Especially without a high production plant ready to go. Rivian has been following Tesla footsteps and Tesla has always had problem hitting the low prices they have announced (They were suppose to have a $40K CT). Very curious about the $45K trim specs.

Not too crazy about the electronic button to open the door from inside. I want everything mechanical when it comes to getting out of doge/Rivian. They do have an emergency handle but in a fire a passenger probably won be able to find it.

My criticism of the Rav4 and CUVs overall is more to do with how they're seen as utilitarian commuter vehicles that attract people who don't care much for driving - thus are less careful on the road.

You can build and run a profitable organization with exciting products too.

The R2 was rethought from the ground up to achieve it. They removed miles of wiring from the car and control all the components like Tesla does. Hopefully it works for them.

Back in 2019 or so Ford and Rivian had plans to co-develop a vehicle. Ford invested over $1bn in Rivian at one point. But that all dissolved. I don’t know exactly why though.

Keep in mind that was when Tax incentives were still in play. I was a reservation holder for R1 and when it came time to release they realized losses per vehicle were too much and they raised the price. Then the backlash forced them to eat the extra loss. I am sure they are better at everything now with the experience they have.

R2 looks better to me than R1. Less complicated suspension, less weight, shorter wheelbase and length. Much better software than we have. Unless they rush it and there are serious bugs in it, price is the only thing that determines the volume and Rivian can’t afford to sell this one at a loss. Kinda chicken and egg deal. They need the volume to lower the cost. They need lower cost for higher volume.

I am so confused. RAV4 is the number one selling vehicle in the USA?

I hope it does too, but the design cues suck. The R2 looks like a “Honey I Shrunk the R1S” and that is a 5 year old design. I get that the lights and such are part of their branding, but make it look better. 🤷‍♂️

The embedded ai, the software-defined everything, and the fear of mechanical interfaces is making me second-guess our reservation. We'll test drive it, but I don't think we'll buy one to replace the Mustang when it's time. It's too bad. We were looking forward to a small, off-road capable SUV.
