What’s your next BEV Pickup?

Having just retired, I‘m no longer laying down 90-100 miles a day… more like 10. Consulting will add some as does being a college trustee. At my current rate I’ll hit 100K in 12 years.

I'm a sort of “set & forget” type and limit big screen use to time and distance calcs (I’ll be home by x.xx when I’m traveling).

OTAs have been seamless. And quirks have been few and recall notices easy to deal with. The extremely low maintenance costs and our cheap electricity ($.064/KWh) means we’ve netted +$30K in fuel savings between our MachE & Lightning in a combined 120,000 miles of charging at home.

Upshot… at our age… we may never buy another vehicle. We‘ve kept ICE vehicles 10-12 years. BEVs are heading in the right direction of powertrain simplicity & efficiency. My father would drive a vehicle till he was bored with it. Honda Accords & Mazda pickups typical.

I’d predict future vehicles will have a far simpler physical nature based on needs for production efficiency. Software simplicity.. no though chip life might be better. As long as there is a way to ignore the complexity side by a “I JUST WANT TO DRIVE THE DAMN CAR” button… I’ll be ok.

Chances are it’ll be more like:

”James, what is your destination“?
“Hal, Home you smarmy A-Hole”
”James, have you been… drinking, …
I may need to call the authorities“.

Not true. The EREV or “Harvester” as they call it was originally an option, and actually still is. You can still reserve a pure BEV option on their website today.

However, I doubt they will ever release the BEV-only model. If they do it will certainly come after the EREV as they have said 85% of reservations were for the Harvester.

I have no interest in EREV. The range I have now is sufficient. I don’t want to go back to oil or gas ever.

26k miles only and you want to jump ship? There is nothing comparable to the lightning on the market right now (US). Stellantis is ugly heavy and expensive. Rivian is fancy but small, also pricey. The rest is just speculation until actual units hit the market. So like others I'll be driving my truck until the end. Hoping Ford will get their act together and offer an actual F150 lightning replacement non EREV!
In the meantime I'll be up for a BMW EV in the near future.

I own an R1T and have been looking at switching out of it before the warranty ends. I love the Rivian but it's probably going to be expensive out of warranty with the fancy suspension. So in the last few weeks I test drove the Lightning, Silverado & Sierra EVs. To be honest, they're all pretty nice vehicles with pros and cons, I still struggle with what wins. I have a feeling the Lightning will have the fewest issues in 10 years over the others, the more tech the more to break.

I got in at MSRP in 22’ have had the truck for almost 4 years and with how much software these need I just don’t see it aging well after a couple more years as they invest less and less in keeping them up to date.
When I traded in my 2020 Ranger Lariat for my Lightning I thought I had found my first pickup to drive into the ground. Always loved the ICE Lightnings and to get an EV 150 it was like they were made for me. Guess we weren’t a big enough market to offset the governments changes in stance in EVs.

I’ll probably look into either GMC/Chevy or Rivian assuming GMC doesn’t go the same route Ford did.

They might be rolling up all the companies and going public. They could just give everyone a CT and keep the sales going lol

I previously was not concerned with keeping the truck for 4-5 more years but lack of investment to keep the software in these things appropriate is telling my gut part ways sooner than later.

I am just curious what about the software do you need changed? For me the software is just fine, and I could care less if I get more OTA updates, or if the app works or not. I have never relied on or needed the app for anything. I certainly don't think the grass is greener anywhere else either.

Having a truck has been nice, but I've only used it as a truck maybe, half a dozen times in the past 3 years. My main reason for the lightning over a more efficient EV was ProPower. The only thing that will make me switch is being able to get over 2.5mpk at 75mph & 240v access to the battery. Until then, I'm happy.

Whatever it is will have to be set up for significant towing like the Lightning. That means towing capacity and it means a charge port at the front of the truck. Left-rear charge ports are incompatible with charging at 99.5% of existing DCFCs.

The Scout will be built in Blythewood, South Carolina. Until SC secedes again, the Scout will still be American made.

I've worked on several Mercedes of all types and none of them impressed me in the least, same for BMW and Audi. Eurojunk!

I'll stick with American made regardless of import content.

Certainly an interesting take. It’s interesting that I’ve yet to experience an American made vehicle that met or exceed the quality standards of German vehicles.

If you want cheap, you get what you pay for.

You haven't worked on them like I have to see what I've seen in those vehicles. I won't own one and I know how to fix them. Granted it's been a few years so maybe they've improved.

Wrong. I’ve maintained all of my out of warranty German cars for the last 20 years, they’re really not so bad. Sure, Mercedes is known for being overly complex at times, but domestically they also have ZERO competition in each segment. I’ll take a G63 over a Bronco Raptor ANY day. I’d also take an AMG GT-R over a Mustang Dark Horse or GT500.

Unfortunately in 2026 the Lightning IS cheap, which is a sad fact in and of itself. It also is cheap when it comes to equipment. No auto wipers on $73k trucks? What!?! Lots of little cost savings measures were taken on all trims, tons of fit and finish issues, too many recalls, and I can go on and on. Please don’t misunderstand, I like the Lightning, and I’m glad Ford actually made it. But from a quality perspective it’s not even close to the engineering quality of most German vehicles.
