Ford Fathom EV Pickup ($28,350 Starting Price) - News & Info

I’m a Maverick owner and active on the Maverick forum.
I was all in on a lightning when it came out but the battery performance in the winter killed my purchase, price was part of it too. When the Maverick came out, I jumped on it. An AWD hybrid truck was a compromise for me.

From the Maverick owners viewpoint, the Fathom is what we have always wanted. The Maverick is crushing sales and Maverick owners feel the Fathom will crush sales too.

Correct me if I’m wrong, many (most?) Lightning buyers bought the Lightning because it was an EV truck and not because it was an electric F150. How many Lightning buyers would have still bought the lightning if it were smaller and cost less money?

If this actually makes it to market at the advertised price point, it will be just ok. No crazy sales, just a lot of hype initially and then ford will claim it’s unprofitable. The slate and/or scout if they make it to market will be the same. These will be popular in the average forum aged person age group so like 35-60, which many of “us” type folks can see the value in this being ( and have the disposable income for) a second vehicle or a chance at living out our nostalgic teenage to twenties life of having a vehicle that did vehicle things with little to no frills.

I’d buy one at the price point advertised, but wouldn’t at a dollar more in hopes that Ford and any other manufacturers pay the fiscal cost of bamboozling all of us with something half-cocked just to appease the government or media.

The Fathom isn't going to solve winter performance. I also have a Tacoma and would much rather jump in the Lightning even just driving around town.

I have no idea whether most Lightning buyers bought an EV truck vs. an electric F-150.

I would not have bought a smaller truck, and won't.

Different use case, different category of vehicle, different demographic of buyer. In my opinion maybe 30% of the Lighting buyers would have chosen an EV Maverick. I'm not saying it wouldn't sell, just been a different set of buyers. And no I will not buy a small Ford EV.

I had a Mach-E but wanted something more useful, and the Lightning was the only reasonable option. Had there been an electric Ranger, I likely would've gone with the smaller option.

Another viewpoint from a Lightning owner. I would consider owning a Fathom as a daily driver and then also having an aluminum body F-150 gas truck around for long road trips and towing long distances.

I only bought an F150 because Ford wasn’t selling the Ranger in the US in 2018. I traded that one in for the Lightning in 2022. If they had a Ranger EV today I would buy it in a heartbeat. I’ll look at the Fathom but I suspect it will be too small for me. If they make an SUV version with at least some off-road capability I would probably consider one for a second vehicle. What I really want is a Bronco EV.

I’m not criticizing your thought process but curious. If you’re looking at a 2 vehicle solution with one being a F150 gas why consider a 2nd truck instead of a longer range ev car/ crossover. I’m evidently misjudging this issue. The complaints I hear/ saw were range and towing, not that the F150 was to big.

Ev car/Crossover is too small for long distance travel for my family. I pull an enclosed trailer a 1,000 miles one way to visit my brother. A 36 gallon gas tank on a Gas F-150 contains a lot more energy than almost any EV battery. Yes you can do that trip in an EV. But stopping and charging every 120 miles sounds awful to me.

I live in the flyover region of the USA and we farm. Trucks are tools. An old F-150 gas can be used as a tool and parked in favor of a Fathom for running around town, dropping off and picking up kids, quick trip to store.

As always, your mileage may vary. Your use case is most likely different. Your vehicle purchase preferences and budget are probably different. Probably the only thing we are similar on is our like for EVs

Fully understand the need for the F150 gas. I farm in Midwest also. My Lightning is my daily driver farm truck but I also have a 3500HD so ya. What I’m referring to is the choice between a EV small truck vs an EV car/crossover given you have the F150 gas for the truck needs. No big deal like you say everyone has different needs

Maybe someone has mentioned it already, but a "fathom" in measurement is 6ft.
So I wonder if this truck will have a midgate so that the 4'-4.5' bed with the the midgate down will be a 6' bed.....
Seems logical to me

Sorry, totally misread your question. Good to see a fellow farmer here. I like the idea of a small pickup versus a SUV. Still use the bed for smaller stuff.

My Grandfather had a VW diesel pickup on the farm that was used for parts runs and light use. I rode on the non-seat between the bucket seats a lot as a youngster. Good memories.

One thing miss d in this thread is subscriptions. Farley has stated that they want subscriptions and only Ford dealers.being able to work on their new vehicles.

In the video linked below, the creator makes the case from reading the fine print that the Fathom is going to be "a subscription truck". He admits he could be wrong but we know car.manufactueres want to go this way. Just like John Deer did for tractors and GM is trying to do now.
