I would not recommend it. WD-40 is not a contact cleaner.

I have used (CRC I think) electronics cleaner on mine it is quick drying, sounds like it is the same or similar, if if you just spray it on the contacts, then it should not get on the paint anyway because of the plastic around the plug. I could have gotten it on there, but I don’t recall and I don’t think it would be a huge issue if you did.

You are fixing a problem that doesn't exist. I don't know if it would cause additional problems but I do know that doing nothing won't cause additional problems and it's cheaper.

DeOxyIt is the way to go for any type of electric contact cleaning, tiny to (relatively) large.

Do not use any cleaner that leaves a protective residue behind (most do). The contacts must be clean with no residue to handle the current required for EVs.

I haven’t sprayed these on my truck socket but I’ve used these on my trailers 30/50A plugs and trailer to truck contacts. I keep it in my truck and have sprayed L2 chargers that show signs of corrosion when I’m on the road both NACS and J17722 never used it on a CCS.

DeOxIT leaves a protective residue. This should not be used for high current contacts - especially DCFC. It works wonders on low-power electronic circuits and I use it for that.

I would not recommend it. WD-40 is not a contact cleaner.
WD40 Specialist Contact cleaner is not standard WD40 and is specially formulated as a contact cleaner. I have not used it for this purpose but it states that it leaves no residue, which should be ok for cleaning the port and gun contacts.

Definitely do not use standard WD40 for this, as it leaves a light oil residue.

They make a special formulation for contacts.

I have used regular WD-40 on a seat detector connector in my Ranger that kept malfunctioning due to a bad connection - fixed it. Regular WD-40 displaces moisture and cleans grime oil etc. off of things.

The contact cleaner removes oil, dirt and grime that could be interfering with electrical connections without leaving any residue. They say it is safe for most surfaces.

So I found the regular WD-40 worked on an electrical connector in my 2001 Ranger, and did not harm the plastic parts. But that was a low voltage low current connection.
