For the past couple of months I noticed my battery draining more then usual and having less range. I take the same communte for 5 days every week for the past two years and I have a feel for exactly how much percentage of my battery gets used and how much range it typically estimates. I usually use more in the winter for running the heater and the cold usually results in less range predicted so I didn't think much of it but as we got to the warmer months I noticed both my range was not improving and I was using 1 or 2 more percentage then I usually did on a commute. I chalked it up possible battery degredation after almost 2 years of ownership and the guessometer just not correcting itself from the winter months.
Finally, on May 20th I was at work and I got the dreaded Powertrain fault error on the dash when I started up my truck to leave, power was limited to 54 percent and it refused to charge. It would still drive. I used forscan lite on my phone to read the codes and it was P0B24 - Battery 'A' Voltage Unstable. I read some stuff on the forum that it may fix it to clear the code and charge to 100 percent. At least I hoped that it would anyways. I charged to 100 percent and drove with no errors for about a day in a half before the code appeared again and I knew I was going to have to take it in to get fixed. After reading so many horror stories here on the forum about weeks and sometimes months waiting for a battery module replacement I was dreading the experience. I took my truck in and left it with the service department, they told me it would take a day or two before an EV tech could look at it because they only have two. After two days they confirmed my suspicion, bad battery cell in one of the modules. 3 days later the battery module was replaced and ready to get picked up. To be honest I was in disbelief. I expected at minimum two weeks but in five days they turned it around. Truck is driving like when it was new and the expected range is exactly where I usually see it for my commute and the percentage use is back to what I expect.
I was ready to sell my truck when I saw the error on the dash and shop for something else after this. I thought I had made a better choice buying the 2024 over the 2023 year because of the widespread issue for battery module failures in the 2023 year of trucks. I could not believe it had happened to me. That changed after a day or two when I accepted that these things happen and I do enjoy my truck and have put a lot of work into it to really make it mine. By the time they finshed the repair and turned it around in only 5 days I was missing my truck bigtime and was happy to be behind the wheel again. I was also blown away by how quick it was fixed. This positive experience has put me at ease with owning this truck for the long term. Even if I had to take it in again I know it'll be fixed, at least within the 100,000 mile warranty and it won't take ages to turnaround.
