Ya the only thing I could see the OBD device complicate is unintended LVB drain. But since the truck was on, that shouldn't be a problem. Really wish people wouldn't be so afraid to just say "I don't know" instead of feeding us clear BS.
However, 3rd party obd plug ins can cause problems. The multiple computers attached to the busses are using sensitive signals and can get interference from such a device.

I'd try to replicate the failure multiple times rather than just blame something though.

I don't recommend using any kind of obd plug unless you are reading data for troubleshooting and especially not on this sophisticated of a vehicle. Insurance be damned.

Fair point, this ain't my dad's '92 Chevy. It does seem plausible that an OBD reader could inadvertently interrupt messaging. Sounds incredibly hard to diagnose that, so I don't envy the tech's who are working the issue.

Another case here. After the last software update, I did not have any Fordpass App issue until recently. Pulling fuse 32 never caused any problems before but this time, I did it while charging and like others I got the error. Power was at 100% while I had the error but 12V battery when truck was on was reading only 13.46V (It used to be in 15V territory before). ODBII was reading 12V SOC at 90%. Several on and off cycles got rid of the error and pushed 12V battery voltage to 14V territory (still not 15V). I have now lost a bit of confidence on the truck even if this was partly self inflicted and won’t be repeated. Anyone has a cleaner solution to reset the modem? If this has caused any further issues for anyone else down the road, please let me know so I can look out for those issues.

Since pulling the fuse fixed the app, I did get a bunch of messages on the app. Here it is for your reference:

I have not taken it for a drive yet. I will update this note if there is further complications.

Well add me to this list. Walked out to plug my truck in this morning and it kept throwing “charging error”. Tried the emporia and my wife’s Tesla mobile charger with a j1772 adapter and same result. Pulled the negative cable on the 12v. No change. Got in the truck and powered it on. It said “stop now” and “service vehicle soon”. Also power was reduced to 25%. Hopefully it’s the 12v. I also haven’t received an update in nearly 2 months so that also leads me to think it’s the 12v. I dropped it off at the local ford dealer. The tech I spoke to did say it was throwing low voltage codes but didn’t elaborate.

Hey Kurtis! I can take a closer look into your warning error/battery concerns if you'd like. Can you send us a direct message with your VIN and the service dealership name/location? To send a private message, just click on our username and select "Start Conversation".

Small update. Have not heard from the dealer yet but when I dropped it off they did say they probably couldn't get to it until today. Until this morning the app was not reporting any issues. Around 11AM it updated with two issues. 1. Powertrain malfunction and 2. High voltage battery issue. This spooked me initially but about an hour later the issues were cleared and the truck is now charging. Sounds like they were just messing with it and something triggered the warnings. If I were to guess they just reset everything and now its back to normal. Hopefully I get a call soon saying its got a clean bill of health but who knows.

Update 3. Called the dealer today to check on things. Service guy said they did a reset and the truck was working and charging properly. He seemed to imply my non Ford charging EVSE (emporia) was to blame. Not too sure about that. He said it was ready and I could come pick it up. On the way to the dealer I got the same powertrain malfunction/high voltage battery issue warning on my app which didn't fill me with confidence. Sure enough I show up and the valet brings my truck up front and its showing the same warnings on the dash with power limited to 25%. Service guy apologized and took the truck back. Said they will likely have to reach out to Ford's BEV specialists for help. I'm bummed to say the least. This is looking more serious, likely a bad module.

And a not great dealer since if it is a bad module that set off that fault there is a pretty clear message and diagnostic procedure
He did mention that it wasn’t throwing any codes and that they have never seen this before. How true that is I can not say. Very surprising for a big dealer in Southern California that likely moves a lot of bevs.

I can tell you with ABSOLUTE certainty that your truck had fault codes

Update 4. Spoke to the dealer this morning. Advisor said ford is sending out a new “battery box”. Not sure if that means a single module or the whole battery but I’ll press them for details next time. Sounds like the truck is going to be there for a week or two more.
Just goes to show that even if you’re really gentle on the battery like I am you can still have issues. I charged it to 80% on a regular basis and maybe charged to 100% once or twice a month for longer trips. Never let it sit at high or low state of charge for more than a couple hours. I’m in a loaner Ice f150 for now but really miss my lightning.
