Expecting my Pro delivery early/mid July. Getting ready to finally pick a charger. Thinking about ordering the 48A Ford charger that's for the Mach-E. Ford website showing it for $799. Gonna try calling dealer where my truck is being delivered to see if i can get it cheaper thru them. Anyone else going this route since our Pro's don't really benefit from the 80A charger?

I was contemplating a cheaper 40A charger for between $400-500..but since i can't find a good 48A aftermarket choice for much cheaper, i may just go with OEM.

Respectfully I dont think your dealer would be able to help you out much. I may be wrong.

That's my plan. I already have a Ford Connected Charge Station for my Mach-E and plan to use it for my Lightning Pro. It works great for me. Its not super sophisticated in terms of software but I don't need it to be. The integration with the FordPass App has changed over time with features coming & going, and even some wacky bugs where charging metrics were gone for like 6 months. My only need was that it delivers 48A to my EV so these things didn't bother me as software features were not the draw for me.

I use the FCCS with my Mach-E. It’s fine, but you can probably get a better 48A EVSE for less money.

As others have commented, you can get a branded one with the Blue Oval on it and Ford Pass app integration, maybe points, too? Or, you can probably save at least hundred bucks with another brand. I have a Chargepoint Home Flex. It's been plugging away for me for 18 months. I like it; it even has a nice glow to it. 🌟 I bought it after watching about all of @tommolog 's EVSE reviews.

Using the included mobile charger on my Nema 14-50 outlet in the garage. Did this for years with my Model S and never had an issue.

Came here to say this and you beat me to it. Tom does excellent reviews of EVSE. I plan on hardwiring the Chargepoint to 48a based on a positive review and good rating for cold weather operation. (It will be mounted outside in upstate NY)

Agree - when I compared the 48A chargers - Juicebox, Chargepoint, Emporia and Ford all did the same job at different prices.

I chose the least expensive: Emporia L2 48A EVSE - saves about $350 off Ford's 48A.

Electrician is installing it today for $300 labor.

Total cost: $750.

Many of the non-Ford chargers offer distinct advantages over the Ford chargers including more reporting, easier downgrading of charging speed, and most importantly a discount or rebate from an electric utility company.

Two things:
  • Check if your utility has any incentives on EVSE purchase.
  • If you do end up settling on FCCS, buy it after your truck is delivered and you received FordPass points. Then make sure to use the points to reduce the cost.
Also when in stock, ChargePoint is $100 cheaper than FCCS.

I will also throw this out there..if you are looking to use the EVSE to charge a PHEV or you are looking to add a PHEV to your garage in the future, the 80A Ford Pro charger MAY not work because it has the separate pins on the bottom where the DCFC goes(CCS?). I don't think most PHEVS have DCFC capability so I'm not sure they would have that cutout, To charge these you would need a plain j1772 connector...

I have (2) 48A chargers from Tesla and a 14-50 NEMA installed, so I won’t be buying it, but if cost is a concern I’d probably go down to the 40A, but take a look at your usage pattern.

Charging at a lower current is more efficient. I found I stressed my homes electrical system quite a bit with 2 cars on at 48A each. It wasn’t healthy for home appliances and I ended up installing surge protectors in every electrical panel.

Since then, I charge at around 20A because I found it was sufficient to be full by the time I use the car for our use. We do bump it up on occasion if we need a faster charge but 99% of the time we only utilize about 20A.

Edit. The additional 8A would provide approx 1.9kWh of charging. Over a 0-100% charge it would save you roughly 1.5-2hours. 50% would save 45min-1 hour.

So again, depends how much you need daily and how long you’re typically home in stretches.
