Has anyone hauled a motorcycle in the bed with the gate down? Any impact to range?

I have the same question. Wondering if it will fit with the tailgate closed. BMW R1250GS. I know it will fit with tailgate down.

I put my KTM 790 in the back without issue. If I move it diagonally, I can close the tail gate. Pretty much no impact on range in my experience.

I pulled this from Advrider.com. The rider who posted it said this is a 5.5' bed. So it looks like it's possible.

I saw that one, but he said “short bed” so I wasn’t sure if it was a 6.5’ bed

Since posting this, I have hauled various motorcycles in the back of the truck. The impact to range is very modest. I do park them straight in using a wheel chock. Passes the “that isn’t going anywhere” test.

The post I saw said 5.5' bed:

"This is in the back of a 2013 f150 with the crew cab and 5.5’ bed."

What kind of wheel chock are you using? I see one at Harbor Freight, but I would need to bolt it down to a piece of plywood.

I rely on the straps. It's very stable. I use it in the garage as well.
I am planning on buying a motorcycle out of state and was wondering how difficult it is to load it up in such a high bed. Are you using atv ramps or a single 8-9 inch ramp?

Usually you want two ramps. One in the center for the bike and one to the side for you to walk on and stabilize the bike as you walk up alongside. (and a helper to help push the bike up the ramp for heavier bikes). With my old Yamaha 500 Enduro, I could get a good rolling start and with inertia and a good push, I can roll it right up the ramp and walk up the side ramp with it holding the handlebars into the truck bed with it.

A wider ramp more like 12" is easer for walking up. Be sure you stabilize the ramps so they cannot slide out using the strap or pin. Or a wider ramp will work.

The Lightning bed IS higher than older pickups, but it seems all modern pickups are these days. You may want longer ramps like 7' instead of the 6' length which was common.

Also, take advantage of terrain. Park the truck backed up with the rear wheels down in the gutter against the curb and the ramps sitting up higher on the yard is a common way to lower the angle. I have a low retaining wall along one side of my driveway that frequently gets used as a loading dock for loading and unloading wheeled things from the truck.

I have a pair like these from Discount Ramps and they have served me well for motorcycles and tractors, and other wheeled things into pickup trucks and trailers:

7.5’ ramps, it is pretty steep. It can be done, but not easy. Much better to find berm and put ramp on that, which lessens the angle. A lighter bike would be easier to maneuver.

I'm in a similar situation, that looks like a 1200/1250GS. I have a Hayabusa and a Concours 14, both are big and heavy. I don't have the space for storing a trailer that I'll use once/twice a year.
