for a 2024 Lightning, do you lose anything from going to a Comma 4 from a Comma 3x? I thought I heard somewhere the Comma 4 is still so new that the software for 3X is still more mature? Sorry, I'm completely new at this

They control the same, it’s the same chipset, it’s just different screens. The 3X has a lot of cool stuff you can display while driving like battery status, stops signs, road names, speed of vehicle in front of you etc. can’t put any of that stuff on the tiny C4 screen.

I have a 3X I haven't installed yet, I've read that the C4 has better thermal management, I'm in the Southern US and it gets hot in the summer... if you were me, would you get the C4?

The thermal management is more about being able to run bigger more complex models, but I'm not sure if they will ever be able to do that. When the car / AC is off, I still wouldn't leave the C4 on the windshield. I live in Houston and I always pull my device off the windshield when the car is parked in the sun. I designed a quick-release dock to make taking the device out super quick. The C3X mount is now open source and you can build it yourself, or I can make one for you. The C4 dock will go open source after i sell 50 of them and recoup my development cost.

I live in SWLA and no shade for the wicked. I also leave for work in the late afternoon. I've got a C3 in a Corolla which has overheated maybe twice in 3? years of ownership and a C3 in the Lightning since last October, I leave mine plugged in despite having @Ajzride fantastical sliding dock. It definitely will overheat and it takes ~3-4 minutes of driving before it boots back up.

Same here. Our C4 is being used only for development inside. We only put it in the car for testing what we wrote.

Do you have a link for the open source dock you were talking about? I assume it's 3D printable? I have that dongle for the Canbus errors... how does that integrate into the dock?

The dongle you have won't integrate into the dock. We ordered a handful of ones that would, but they are almost gone now, I think we only have 3 left. Just put the one you have somewhere in the USB path between the harness box and the dock. Typically I advise people to run the long USB cable to the rear view mirror cover, put the dongle between the long usb and a short one that runs to the dock.

Make sure you print this out of ASA or ABS, PETG will not hold up on the windshield.

great, thanks for that advice, between ABS and ASA, which is better? and should we do any custom wall strength % because it will be sitting in the sun the whole time?

edit, also, for my Lightning, which degree offset model should I use for the glass base?

ASA is easier to print than ABS.

4 walls, 15% infill.
