New owner of a 2024 Ford Lighting XLT. Want to get a fast charging adapter. Ford sells theirs for $200. Would like to know if that is the best product vs other brands?

I have used Ford and A2Z and both work fine. The A2Z is heavier (more substantial) but I kept the Ford and gave the A2Z to a friend.

You can buy the original Tesla OEM adapter from Rivian for $250 with free shipping BUT NO RETURNS ALLOWED.

https://rivian.com/gear-shop/p/nacs-dc-adapter

You can reach out to your dealer to see how much the Lectron branded OEM Ford adapter is. There is some slight differences between the OEM lectron adapters and the retail Lectron adapters. You will have to reach out to Lectron to confirm if they have made any new retail revisions after releasing adapters for OEMs.

Edit: The Ford one you mentioned for $200 looks like the Lectron version. This one will work just fine as well.

https://www.ford.com/product/ford-fast-charging-adapter-nacs-p2999073032

The A2Z EV Typhoon pro adapter is also available with "FORD" discount code for $162 shipped. This is one of the most popular adapters currently being used by Rivian owners, F-150 lightning owners, GMC, Chevy, Polestar, Volvo and Mustang Mach-E owners.

I personally keep both the OEM Tesla adapter and A2Z Stellar AC / Typhoon Pro DCFC adapter to have myself covered at all times.

This ensures I have a backup always and I can charge at Tesla Destination chargers commonly found at hotels / shopping center / parking lots.

After trying the Typhoon Pro, Typhoon and Ford / Tesla OEM adapter. Here are my thoughts on them.

They all work great and beats having to use Electrify America. The most user friendly is the Typhoon pro due to the single switch to control the CCS side and NACS side. I also like how easy it is to hold the Typhoon pro securely. The lip on the NACS side is a nice touch to make sure the adapter doesn’t slip out of your hand.

The Ford / OEM Tesla dual latch is a little more user friendly compared to original Typhoon but a little harder to grip securely while toggling both the latches. I think grip tape might be nice to have as long as it doesn’t mess with thermals.

Discount promo code “FORD” is still working and free shipping is also available.

You can bundle the A2Z Stellar AC Tesla to J-1772 for $92 additional after discount by adding both into your cart.

The level 2 Stellar adapter will pay for itself overtime by avoiding an expensive fast charge on the road every night while you sleep at the hotel with Tesla destination charging.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

Here's a Ford official adapter vs A2Z comparison. Also shows how to physically do the steps to plug in, activate and charge.

Here's Ford talking about the development of their NACS adapter.

Here's a comparison of Ford adapter vs Lectron. EVBuyersGuide also gives some other thoughts and physically shows connecting all the pieces.

Definitely check out the video here to see the differences. The additional safety interlock combined with the improved ergonomics make it the undisputed favorite for me. It's not "just" a logo, it's an improvement. I would not use any adapter without that interlock, personally.

It's also not a bad price - sure MSRP is $200, but you can also get a discount using the 15% off promo code right on the page (https://www.ford.com/product/ford-fast-charging-adapter-nacs-p2999073032), and also use any FordPass Rewards points to further reduce the final price, unless you're in Arizona, Oklahoma, or Vermont, in which case your dealer will set pricing.

I ordered the A2Z Typhoon Pro the day after I bought my truck. At the time, Ford was still months behind at processing orders for theirs. I have used it 5 times so far and worked great. I recently also bought the A2Z Stellar NACS to J1772 adapter - not that I expect to use it much.

Based on my observations around here, I'm almost laughing at that statement. According to the Tesla app, there are lot of Destination chargers (none close to home) - almost all of which are private, and every one I have checked (private or not) are charging almost as much as a SuperCharger. I have not seen a free one yet.

By comparison, almost every shopping center has at least a couple free J1772 chargers (if you can find one not fully busy).

I never look for free charging except when on a trip. I try to find hotels with free charging. Often, they are Tesla Destination chargers, and where they have both, Tesla is almost always faster.

Go with the Ford one @Charge_Rob outlines in post 5. It is the newest and best - and backed by Ford.

I charged for a whole week away from home at a hotel at no extra cost compared to any regular customer. I did around 150 miles a day of driving and charged back to 100% every night. This probably saved me 200+ kWh and let me arrive on fumes to top back off to 100% and also leave the hotel with 100% charge.

I also charged multiple times at a hotel using their valet Tesla onsite chargers which were rated higher than the J-1772 charger. I need all the charging speed I can get to fill up 130+ kWh battery (see screenshots for just 2 sample Level 2 AC charging sessions at a hotel where charging is included and easily saved me 100 kWh in one stay).

That same hotel the J-1772 chargers were constantly occupied where the Tesla chargers were still available to use.

Your mileage may vary for sure. In my case, I have already saved 300+ kWh by not charging at Level 3 adapters on the go and instead using Tesla destination chargers at hotels I try to stay at.

I try to plan my hotel stays where EV charging is an option and that helps to offset some of the cost of the stay / adapter. I would hate to show up at a hotel and there is only a Tesla AC Level 2 charger on site or available to use when I check-in.

I rather have the flexibility of being able to choose between Tesla AC chargers or J-1772.

Here is real life examples where you can use a Level 2 AC NACS to J-1772 adapter to avoid expensive Level 3 chargers. Most of my charging on Level 2 has been free, otherwise I would rather just pay for Level 3 charging with membership plan rates.

I have never had to activate a Tesla Destination charger in 3.5 years of using them at hotels. Plug in and they work.

The ones at all the hotels I stayed at just worked. I did have to go to one hotel at the front desk to register my plates / vehicle and get the key to the breaker box.

I think you might need to use the Tesla app if you are going to a destination charger that actually has a cost versus a Tesla charger installed by the hotel at their on-site parking lot with no cost.

The destination charger in OKC didn't look like you needed an app and said open to public 24/7 on the website too.

I usually look for hotels where there is no cost to charge, otherwise I will just stick with DC fast charging unless the cost is lower for Level 2 AC compared to Level 3.

This is the one where I needed a key to get access to the breaker box and charged the whole week at no cost with no app. This is just an on-site Tesla charger which was faster than the J-1772 charger. It's nice to have options especially when both are free.

Seems that you travel a lot. Another question I have is do these adapters have a locking mechanism that prevents people from stealing it or removing your connection and charging their vehicle at someone else nickel?

I did around 27,000 miles in 22 months while working from home and did plenty of road trips that were 1000 miles round trip to get out of the house. I worked hard to find reason to go on road trips and just drive my car around.

One of the reason I like the level 2 AC A2Z EV Stellar adapter is the built in lock. I have seen some other level 2 adapters that come with a spot to insert a small padlock.

As for Level 3 adapter, I believe that is up to each manufacturer if they lock the CCS plug during charging sessions.

The lightning has a button to stop charging right on it.

I would double check but I think CCS1 charging with DCFC will be locked when charging is active.

AC level 2 NACS to J-1772 is not locked when charging. For that you will want to get the A2Z EV stellar with built in lock or buy an adapter with a spot for a lock.

Sometimes. I did have to pay at a hotel in the DC area back in December but outside of the large metro areas they tend to be free. It was still only about 2/3s of the cost of the nearby Supercharger and I was able to go to 100%.
