Having one steering wheel to steer in both directions is better than one steering wheel to go right and another wheel to steer left!
Two steering wheels is more efficient.

Just went and did some testing. All testing done at the exact same speeds and at the same locations, battery SOC was within a few % for each test. The numbers are the maximum amperage returned to the battery.

At 55mph
1pd drive - 306a
1pd drive w/ sport mode - 309a
2pd drive - 327a

At 75mph
1pd drive - 310a
1pd drive w/ sport mode - 317a
2pd drive - 427a (yes, four hundred)

Applying the brake pedal in 2pd drive decidedly has more deceleration and sends more energy back to the battery.
I can buy that 2PD offers more deceleration and thus more Regen while at a higher deceleration rate. However, the distance covered to a stop will be less if the deceleration rate is higher. In other words, if compared energy added over a certain distance it will be the same.

Where it gets interesting is comparing net energy over the same distance at max performance. If max deceleration is greater in 2PD it means you will spend some amount of time using energy while in 1PD you are adding energy over the same distance. Distance is what matters, right? We measure efficiency in m/kWh not w/g.

That's the nice part about all this. We can argue until we are blue in the face. But at the end of the day, both modes are awesome with great efficiency ? Well. As great as possible when driving a brick.
