It's no secret about the gsm being a source of contention for many and I'm no exception.

I can replicate the yellow wrench and associated warnings/codes on demand by driving aggressively where shifting into gear is concerned.

What I did to alleviate that wrench is keep an obd dongle in the truck to clear the code.

Replicating the malfunction is easy, just shift into forward from reverse while still rolling back a little bit or, open the door while in gear with your hand on the shifter and hold a little pressure on it to stimulate you keeping it in gear at the same time.

Almost reminds me of an old 3/4T gmc I had back in the 80's with 3 on the tree.

You try shifting fast in that thing, you're getting out with a screw driver in hand to un-jam the linkage at the firewall. In this case it's a dongle to get rid of the wrench and warnings on screen.

Every single time I've done this results in a GSM error code being set and likely the reason a lot of them get changed out.

Not a concern at all really.
So that's why there's post after post of people swapping out to the rotary switch right?

How about you? Just don't do that then you won't need to reset the code every time since you know what causes the code?

From my read that is mostly because people want the different arrangement of a rotary shifter rather than the stock one - not because of a problem with the stock one.

For whatever it's worth, I prefer the stock shifter. I rest my hand on it almost any time my hand is not on the wheel or actively doing something else. I did have the original shifter replaced a month or so ago on the service bulletin, although I had not observed any issues with the original.

My Dad was an expert shifter of his column shift Chevy. My mom? Not so much.😂

Same for me, I like the floor shifter.

Mine was worn out junk when I bought it. Young and broke, so I carried two long flat head screwdrivers with me just in case.

There have been some failures and if mine fails I might go with a rotary one but I'm not concerned about it.
Funny how the English language works when one doesn't fully understand it. #1)

I see the or, but are these separate issues? I ask because I occasionally will go from reverse to drive and haven't got a wrench yet. That being said, I do have an archived GSM code iirc.

so I like the rotary switch idea but it's not a mod I would attempt. I'm fine with the stick. Never had a problem. And if you and have examine the number of posts vs the number of posters? (many people make multiple posts) I haven't but with a 100,000 Lightning's out there the number who've had a problem with the GSM is most likely small and the number attempting the mod is even smaller.

If I had the flip forward arm rest for the desk option I might consider the swap but I'll stick with the stick.
