Too late I’m already a day in….
Driving with friends down to Cabo. Crossed over at Mexicali yesterday, got to San Filipe Marina Resort where Tesla has one of many (down the Baja) Destination Chargers. However the Tesla charger would let me get a non compatible message on the Ford app. But, they also have a regular generic charger that got us 6.5kw for the night. 100% this morning good to go.
Today elevation change and a forecasted head wind to Guerrero Negro….395km to the next Destination charger….will it work?
More tomorrow…..

Your a brave soul. We would never go father then Ensenada (ICE vehicle). Hopefully the RV has a generator you can use.

If you're using the included adapter, it will not work on Destination Chargers - the Fast Charging Adapter is for DC Fast Chargers only. Do you have an adapter specifically for the Tesla Destination Chargers and it still didn't work?

A Tesla DESTINATION charger requires a different adapter than a Tesla SUPERCHARGER. BOTH types of chargers can be set to TESLA-ONLY. If they are, no adapter you can buy will work.

The San Filipe Marina Resort has an 18kW Tesla DESTINATION charger. According to PlugShare, non-Tesla vehicles have charged fine there in 2024. https://www.plugshare.com/location/132019

This is the adapter you would need for a Tesla DESTINATION charger, code FORDFORUM will get you a 10% discount - https://a2zevshop.com/collections/charging-adapters/products/a2z-stellar-plug?ref=Typhoon

Guerrero Negro has a Tesla Destination charger. All PlugShare comments are from Tesla drivers, so no idea if it's Tesla-only, but it seems you lack the adapter anyway, so you're going to be SOL.

Based on PlugShare, you have a big problem with no compatible chargers on your entire route until you get down to the southern tip (or head east instead of going to Guerrero Negro, if you don't have that adapter). Your only option to charge will be 120v with the Ford Mobile Charger, unless you can find a 14-50 outlet somewhere. Yikes!

And I see 2 Lightnings in the picture. Neither has the proper adapter? If so, this is going to be ugly...

Sounds like a blast. But I don’t think I’d make that trip myself. Stay safe down there.

I have never charged at a Tesla destination charger however I did purchase the proper adapter just in case I ever needed it. Kind of like insurance you hope you never need it but it’s nice to have when you do!!! Speaking of which I hope you have the proper insurance for your trip I think most policies only cover you for a few miles across the border!
Good luck! safe travels!

That white lightning does not seem to have a US plate. At least not familiar to me. Maybe local registration? Therefore OP might be more familiar with the area. Also talking in km vs miles... they should be fine 🙂

Update:
Made it to Guerrero Negro no problem, 70km to spare..!
Qualification:
The grey Lightning is a U.S. plated Lariat extended range, the White Lightning is my wife’s B.C. Chinada plated Flash, 123kw.
I’m talking KMs cause we’re obviously driving the flashy truck.
We had 19% left after 394km and the Lariat had 22% left on arrival in GN…. I think the lady driving the Lariat was drafting…
The RV, unfortunately no usable generator.
Ambient temperature was 42 or 107f for you other folks. AC on and both in Sport Mode.
Yeah, so I found out the Ford supplied Tesla adapter works great with most Superchargers and that was amazing on the way down through the U.S. However I don’t have no fancy Tesla Tap or what ever you call that thing.
Mucho Gracias Señor “RickLightning”, I used your link to order two of those our two trucks.
In future I’m sure they’ll be great….
For now we are the proverbial F’d.
The destination chargers don’t work, neither did they work last night in San Filipe. The SF Marina Resort did have a generic non Tesla charger that gave us a whopping 6.4kw all night long, that got us to 100% at 3 am this morning.
Our friends stayed at Pete’s Camp with their RV and Pete’s had 50amp RV plugs , which I think is a Nema 14-50. Definitely a MUST HAVE…!
That’s our life saver…for tomorrow at Ricardo’s in San Ignacio.
Back to now, we are plugged into a wall at 12a and getting 1.4kw…till noon tomorrow when we should be OK to get to San Ignacio for a fill.
If you plan this trip and have a proven way with the Tesla tap adapter for destination chargers this trip should be a breeze, well kinda. Will take a couple days longer than a ICE car trip, but doable.
(Funny, none of the military checkpoints have discovered the Frunk…😎)
If you don’t have the fancy Tesla connection you will do well with a RV 50a plug.
Been an hour on the 12a and we added 2km…oh boy, bring me another tequila it’s going to be a long night….

Yes No Canadian or U.S. insurance cover you in Mexico but there are various online options that works great, we’ve been using Lewis&Lewis for years, easy to use app, convenient and fast.

As far we could tell with our halfa55 research obviously many Tesla’s made it down the Baja, (Teslas are sold in Mexico) as well a lone Chevy Bolt. (Talk about brave, buying a Chevy…wow!) No Fords. Before buying the Lightning we researched all the big (non Chinese and Korean) manufacturers and no one was selling or planning to sell EVs in Mexico. (Are you listening Ford?) So that’s why we decided to buy a F150 in Canada. We think Ford got it right to electrify an existing F150 truck and not build some fancy looking futuristic thing. It’s my wife’s truck, me I have a F350 Diesel Dually (a man’s truck)
I got a consistent message from the manufacturers down in Mexico, “we don’t have the infrastructure to support a move to EV’s” …”up north they mandate stuff that they can’t support” I thought it was funny.

That includes Tesla plugs, I hid them knowing you didn't have the adapter.
