Key Fob - replacement

So I was careless and lost one of my two key fobs. Local dealer said about $450 to replace / reprogram of which $165 was for the programming. Purchased a replacement fob for $110. Site said still have to take to locksmith or dealer to program / cut the emergency insert key. Any idea if there is a process to program the fob ourselves?

It takes 10 minutes. Either your dealer has a 1 hour minimum, or a $1000/HR labor rate. ?
You can’t do it yourself unless you have 2 keys. I’d check with a locksmith that does a lot of automotive work.

On this topic... is there a smaller key fob that would work? Or third party shells/kits you can swap into a smaller fob? I really hate how obnoxiously large it is compared to what I'm used to from my last car.

I can confidently say that your key fob can go through both the washer and dryer.

Not a Lightning, but I programmed an extra FOB for my 2021 Lariat using this procedure. This should work.

I wish. My 2018 Focus ST had the perfect sized FOB. Only 3 buttons and fit perfect in your front pocket. But they used different frequencies. Couple that with the Lightning FOB being unique because of the Frunk button, and I doubt you can substitute a different one.

I'm pretty sure it's not $1000 per hour, maybe $100 per hour.

When purchasing any new vehicle, I always get a 3rd key and I think they charged me $200. When the new key came in, it took them 20 minutes to program it. Wasn't a big deal.
