Renew Ford Connected Navigation today? Why would I?

I just received this email reminder.

@Ford Motor Company : Why would I pay for this service? After 2 full years of access to the Tesla network and almost 3 years since the announcement it was coming, Ford Connected Navigation still won't route me to Tesla Superchargers. That is roughly half the available DCFC locations in the country and the only way to make some routes work.

Is there any value to this product anymore? The Soon™ on this one has expired.

I think I tried Forrd Navigation once, maybe twice and never again. I used Google nav for while but recent switched to ABRP for all road trip with realtime data. In my opinion there not one do-it-all application for navigating and route planning. I use ABRP but also use Plug Share to pick charging stops. I don't love the user interface of ABRP over Google maps but there's just better customization with ABRP and range estimation is much better. I think this is a struggle for all brands to get right, even Tesla.

In my opinion - NO.
I did not pay for it when mine expired a couple months ago.

Oops. Thanks. You are right (edited). The Tesla network opened to us on February 29, 2024. Ford announced Supercharger access was coming on May 25, 2023.

I hardly ever use Ford Navigation but I do find it the best of the bunch for navigating complex highway exits that I have never used before. The turn graphics are larger and easier to see at a glance and the prompts are generally more numerous and better timed. Would I pay extra? No. My 2024 Lariat did get SC mapping last year and the implementation is again pretty solid, indicating which ones are open to Lightnings and I believe how many chargers are available.

We’re letting all of the Ford subscriptions expire. And we turned off auto updates too so we won’t be surprised by some new subscription to use our heated seats or windshield wipers.

I don't travel enough in my personal vehicle to warrant paying for something I get thats free and even better, waze, and AA either or work great. I'd pay for a sub to blue cruise if it were more reasonable like $10/mth. Or if I travelled more often I might go up to $20/mth.

They want too much imho.

I'm a Ford Man through-and-through, but Ford Nav sucks. It sucks at basic navigation. It STILL shows the path of our road in Maine as going into the woods; the path of the road was changed back when JFK was president!

I use Wayz for Nav -- I love its real-time data -- and I use Tesla for charging.

My assumption is that Ford knows their customers use CarPlay/Android Auto for navigation and don't see the value in putting real resources into built-in Ford navigation. Frankly I don't blame them.

Mine has expired on both my Lightning and my Mach E, and I have zero intention of ever paying for it, which is totally fine. Their marketing emails will continue to come through, which is also fine. They don't shove it down my throat, which I appreciate.

I use Ford Navigation for the traffic. I usually use Google maps for navigation. I use ABRP on trips. Google does not show traffic unless it is on the route. Ford nav shows all the traffic on the map letting me plan alternate routes. That being said I won't pay a subscription to continue using it once it expires.

Short answer: Nope. Ford’s NAV sucks and I use Apple Maps via CarPlay for all my long distance travel (which is quite a lot - so far, 19 Lightning road trips of more than 1500 miles each).

I did update the subscription for Ford Navigation. I regret it. I won’t in the future. On trips ABRP is my go to as it chooses charging stations using my preferences. Use Apple Maps as a back up.

There is no way to do this.

There is, sort of, sometimes.

If you have a truck with the Max Tow package and you are not towing, there is a way to precondition the battery when it is hot out.

The Max Tow package has a second complete cooling loop. If the weather is hot and you are not towing, you can manually cool the system down by putting the truck into Tow mode.

Outside of that, you are right Rick.
