2022 XLT Lightning
I am looking for input and the experiences others have had regarding a SOBDM failure.

Backstory: 2022 XLT Lightning, standard range, would not charge off of level 2 evse. Three level 2 evse showed ground faults and the truck showed the red ring.

I was able to get scheduled for service, the dealer was great to work with. When they contacted Ford to get the replacement covered under warranty, Ford said no since I was over 36k miles. I am at 36,500 miles. I am also past 3 years.

I shared my opinion that it should be covered under the 8 yr / 100k warranty. The onboard charger cannot function without the SOBDM and the onboard charger and related components are specific listed on Fords website as covered by the 8 yr / 100k warranty.

Ford ended up covering a portion of the repair and I paid the balance.

Question for everyone: Have others had their repair / replacement of the SOBDM covered under warranty. Were you past 3 yr / 36k if so?

Am I wrong to believe the module is part of the charger and thus part of the high voltage and eDrive systems.

I appreciate your experience and feedback.

Thanks

We're seeing to many closely associated parts being denied full coverage under 8y/100k

Again folks think seriously about extending your b2b to the furthest you're considering driving this truck, disregard the Las Vegas odd's being slanted to the house.

The SOBDMA IS the on board charger and yes it is 100% covered by the EV powertrain warranty.

Yeah, there is some confusion here. Ford uses the generic SOBDM acronym in several modules. SOBDM stands for Secondary On-board Diagnostic Module. There are three A, B, C:

Secondary On-board Diagnostic Module A (simply SOBDM) does the AC-DC charging up to 48 amps. 2022 and 2023 ER trucks have an additional module (GFM2) that works in conjunction with the SOBDM to achieve 80A charging.

SOBDM-B and SOBDM-C are related to the DC-AC inverters for ProPower. FYI, DC fast charging is controlled through the OBCC module (On Off-board Charge Controller) [edited].

Thanks for everyones comments so far. The comments from the dealer are as follows: "Accessed the diagnostic port & performed a scan. U3000:49 control module failure - SOBDM. Performed PPT AJ, AJ1=no. Found the secondary on board control module internal module failure."

The rest of the comments talk about removing the frunk, battery, battery tray and so on as part of the replacement.

I don't see any references to an A, B or C related to the SOBDM to share here. Since I was not able to charge from a 120v or 240v evse, I believe they replaced SOBDM-A (referring to bmwhitetx post) and thus why I thought it should be covered under the 8 yr/ 100k warranty.

OBCC is Off Board Charge Controller. It's crazy they named it that when it is indeed on board. It is bolted to the top of the SOBDMA.

Yes you need to call the BEV team and demand they get with your dealer and cover ALL your expenses.

Even Ford refers to the SOBDMA as the BCCM in some of their narratives, probably because they know how ridiculous their module acronyms are.

So it sounds to me like the Module A was the issue the OP was having, and Ford and the dealership were the ones confuddled?

Something to watch out for in the future if we have that issue!

I agree these terms are often ambiguous at best, and they give them multiple names which adds to the confusion.

Maybe they (the dude who names things, Ludicrous the Great) meant the phrase to indicate that the "Charge" is coming from "Off Board" and this doohickey controls it...not the best moniker by far!

Maybe he calls watermelons pickles and will trade you dimes for nickles?

To confuse it more, they won't call it SOBDMA. For the A variant, it's simply SOBDM. But when they spell it out they add the "A",
SOBDM = Secondary On-board Diagnostic Module A.
SOBDMB = Secondary On-board Diagnostic Module B.
SOBDMC = Secondary On-board Diagnostic Module C.

Sounds like B and C were given the SOBDMC label after the first one was labeled with no "A", and they weren't up for going back and changing all the references to the first one to add an "A" in all the literature and diagrams...because it probably would have cost Ford a lot to add that "A" everywhere....or maybe it was a typo leaving out the "A" some places?

Now we know how many A's it takes to fill the Albert Hall...

PS: if you get an SOB DM, don't reply!
