I took a rock to my windshield which has progressed to dual tracks around 6" long. I contacted my insurance company (Progressive) & it was only then that I became aware that for replacement windshield, I have to pay my $1,000 deductible. Safelite is the preferred provider but I've cancelled the replacement in order to confer with the forum about reliability of getting Safelite to provide the replacement. Is this something I should turn over to my local Ford dealer? Does anyone have experience with Safelite to know that they can reliably replace this high tech windshield that needs calibration? Thanks!

How much does a windshield cost that it's worth filing an insurance claim?

Your Ford dealer contracts out with a glass company. Even if you go straight to a glass company, if they can't do calibrations they will take it to the dealer.

I'm in exactly the same boat as of a few days ago. Looked at changing my deductible and it doesn't math out vs just getting it fixed out of pocket I suspect.

Agreed that a dealer would just farm it out to a company like Safelite most likely. Might as well cut out the middle not person.

If anyone has recommendations, I'm all ears too.

Safelite replaced my windshield and recalibrated the sensors/cameras last year after a rock hit me. Was a bit over $1000. No insurance involved. They did the replacement inside my garage on a rainy day. No issues with their work. I’ve had no problems with the new windshield…

I recently used Safelite to replace a windshield on a 2023 Ford Escape, and it was like $800. I would get a quote from Ford to see how much they would charge. I think it was around the same price to have Ford do it, but Safelite can come to your home and take care of it.

Bummer.
I have used Safelite in the past with other vehicles with no problems.
Sometimes there was no charge to me because...

Some insurance has full glass coverage with a low or no deductible.

There may be a difference if it broke due to an accident or a rock on the road.

But if it was a rock that fell off a dump truck for example, and you got the license plate number, you could report that to insurance and they'd try to collect from the company or owner, if they are insured of course, otherwise, sue or let it go.

I have a $500 deductible comprehensive policy.
Unfortunately, the hit and run driver who trashed my driver's side mirror was uninsured and left the state after the accident, so I was out the deductible. Yes, it was a $700 total cost for the replacement...lots of electronics in those mirrors. If it had been the passenger side it would have been worse - the parts guy told me that one costs $1100 from Ford!

It would cost me more in time and trouble to sue the guy...so c'est la vie.

In South Carolina, if you have comprehensive coverage, all windows are covered without deductible regardless of how they were damaged. Kind of shocked it isn't the same nationwide!

On topic: I've had multiple non-Lightning F-150 windows replaced by Safelite and never had an issue with the glass or workmanship.

I would be bummed, as I believe my windshield has the Ford Badge 75 yr anniversary sticker on it...

So very appreciative of all the replies. Absolutely no rush to get the windshield replaced & just maybe that will be a repair that won't get made. There is no shame in riding around with a crack in the windshield!!

In states that have vehicle inspections, a cracked windshield usually results in a failure.

My Lightning windshield got hit with a stone when driving and cracked about 2 weeks ago, in bottom left drivers side. No plans to replace it, unless it fails inspection, it’s a truck after all, it’s supposed to have a few bangs and dings here and there😁. I’m with USAA and have comprehensive insurance but I still have to pay my deductible ($1,000). I have used Safelite on other vehicles that have cameras etc that had to be calibrated, never had any issues.

Unlike body dings and scratches, a cracked windshield is considered a safety issue.

Drove an F250 for about 6 years or so with a cracked windshield, never a problem other than on paper. As I said if it fails inspection I’ll replace it.

We had a grain truck with a 6” crack along the bottom. Whenever it went in for inspection, there always happened to be a pair of gloves confidently positioned on the dash……….

I had my local no-name auto glass place replace mine after a bad rock strike. No problems at all, and they knew how to calibrate it (I didn't even know that was necessary, TBH).

I think you'll be fine.
