Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my success with using Pro Power and my Franklin’s V2L feature. I did have to clip the ground but after that everything worked perfectly. I was able to power my home and top off my battery at the same time. Just getting the testing out of the way before winter!

Quick question, why bother transferring energy from one battery to another and take a hit on the losses?

What is your hardware setup?
We have a pretty standard setup. There’s a 6 kW solar array on the roof with Enphase microinverters. The solar feeds into my Enphase combiner, which then connects to the FranklinWH aGate. On the aGate, we have a critical loads panel wired in, along with the aPower battery and the generator module that supports a portable or standby generator, as well as V2L.

Connected to the generator module is a 50 A Reliance generator inlet box. When I hook up the truck, I use a 25-foot, 50 A cord from the generator inlet to the truck, then connect it through a 50 A-to-30 A adapter with the ground pin removed.

Quick question, why bother transferring energy from one battery to another and take a hit on the losses?
It’s just for emergency backup. In the summer, we have plenty of solar to charge the battery and power our household loads. But in the winter, it’s the rainy season, we can lose power for several days at a time. This lets me transfer energy from the truck to the house, while still being able to use the truck for commuting or running errands.

Very nice! I keep waffling on a battery set up since the truck is a great generator and our power rarely goes out. Just grid tied for now. I would love to be able to use the truck to activate my array(micro inverters) if the power goes out when the sun is shining but I can’t justify the cost for now. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting. So what you’re saying is that the aGate sees the Lightning as a “generator”? Also, when the Lightning is exporting power to the aGate, is it actually powering the home or is it topping off the battery to extend battery charge pending normal solar recharging?

My aGate is set up to use the Lightning as a vehicle for V2L. This isn’t very different from the Generator function of the aGate. You can also use the Lightning in Generator mode, though the startup process is a little different. Both functions use the same inlet and Generator Module on the aGate. Generator Mode just has more settings related to generator functions, which I’m not too familiar with.

My Lightning was doing double duty, powering the home loads while also topping off the battery. It looks like the aPower balances the Lightning’s output by prioritizing the home loads first, then sending any extra power to the battery.

Thanks for that reply. I actually work for an electrical contractor, and we specialize in backup power systems - Several ESS battery manufacturers as well as Generac install and service. I have had several customers approach me about how to use the Lightning to extend their batteries in certain situations. This is a very helpful thread.

You're welcome! I also received a white paper from Franklin about using EVs for this purpose. I just asked my contact at Franklin if I can share it publicly or not. I would imagine the answer is yes since I am only a customer to them. Once I get his go ahead, I'll post it here.
