I will apologize right off the bat for the long, detailed post..but I am new to my lightning and I want to make sure I understand what's going on. I posted something similar on reddit, but there has been an update since and this forum seems like a better place to post this

TL;DR DC charging always works, AC works sporadically...any reason this would happen/what should I do?

I bought a 2022 Lightning Lariat ER a week ago. I had to drive it back home with a few stops along the way, all DC charging. Not an issue anywhere.

I have two EVSE (EV Chargers) at home. I have another EV at home as well (Lucid Air Grand Touring). The first one, a PionPower EVSE (relatively new company here in Canada, has a good reputation overall), gets plugged in..doesn't charge, registers as AC Leakage fault error in the app. No problem, I try the other EVSE. This is a Grizzl-E charger (well-established Canadian company and in EV circles in general). Plug it in, registers a "two beep/two blink" error when it tries to charge the truck. I look that up and it means a GFCI Fault.

Okay...fine..maybe something got knocked loose (yay hardcore reference) at one point or another. My 14-50 outlet was installed by a licenced electrician when I built the house, relatively recently. But I figure I'm just going to look through the socket just in case (I did a lot of wiring previously and wired the EV/14-50 outlet in my last house myself). I cant' see what would be wrong...re-strip/re-cut the wires, attach them clean, etc...I keep getting the same two errors on the two chargers.

I finally decide to plug them into my lucid...and bingo, both charge normally without issues. Unplug from the lucid, plug it into the lightning...and boom, errors again.

I post this and others have said they have the same issue...it's the onboard charger and i need to get it repaired. After a bit of fighting with Ford, I'm able to schedule 3-4 days later. I go charge at a DC charger up to ~30% the night before (since it was done to 10% from being used)...and just for fun, when I get home...I plug the lightning back in to confirm it doesn't work...and OF COURSE, it works. I let it charge overnight and it charged at the regular pace the whole night until we unplugged it in the morning.

I called ford and they said to cancel the appointment and to call back if it goes bad again. But I don't want to live with the "will he/won't he" charge for my truck every day.

So what do I do? Is there a pattern of charging I should be looking at with the truck that I don't know about that makes the AC charging wonky? Ford says if it's working before I get there, they won't see the error in the past and can't diagnose it...but once agian, that's insane because that means if it stops working again at home and I arrive there and it works, I'll look like an idiot. This is so frustrating to happen in the first days of owning it.

side note: I bought this from A FORD DEALERSHIP and they said they never heard of anything similar happen and it always charged for them (but they used a DC charger)

Did the dealer find any DTCs? Did they even look?

Once it worked, they said don't even bother coming in .which I thought was odd because I would assume a lot somewhere would show what happened

What does the Ford app show on the charging screen?
Showed nothing in the app. Not even connected. It showed it for a second like a preparing to charge then nothing....the charging circle rotated twice then just turned off

Have you scanned for codes?

I don't have an OBD II
This is what I use, https://a.co/d/eaSrEOr very handy to have and works on all obd2 vehicles not just Ford and works with both ios and android as well as windows depending which model you select.

Forgot to ask, in the Ford app, check to make sure the charging amount slider is at least to the 90% mark, previous owner might have it set low.

I'll look into the OBD II thing but just frustrating that you can't have the truck behave like it's supposed to without extra tools

yes, i checked the slider as well...i was able to charge without issues on DC chargning up to 80-85% when I needed it

2025 Ford Lightning Flash Job 2 😭
I highly recommend picking one up, I especially am loving the OBDLink MX+. That being said, given it's intermittency, I'd think it's one of the following:

A) Faulty/dirty port, clean it and check.
B) Faulty wiring (apparently the wires are extremely yummy, given the leakage this is highly likely)
C) Faulty 12v? Apparently a low 12v causes a myriad of issues.
D) Faulty relay
E) Faulty on board charger

Codes would be helpful if you could get them from a parts store until you get your own OBD, but sometimes they aren't up to date.

That's fair and good guesses as to what it could be. I'll look into most of what i can without the OBD and get one as soon as possible. Thanks!

I agree with getting an OBD reader. I actually have two that live in my truck. The first is an OBDLink LX ( https://a.co/d/0V6b7p3 ) that I had before I bought my Lightning. This uses BlueTooth to connect to my phone and is Android only, and although the description says it does not work with hybrid or electric vehicles, it works fine with my Lightning using CarScanner. The second is the OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter ( https://a.co/d/6uM7iz2 ) that is a wired USB adapter that I bought specifically for using FORScan. That is the recommended adapter in the FORScan thread.

A BlueTooth OBD is FAR more convenient for "routine" monitoring. I have the phone connect to the OBD reader and run CarScanner which then casts to the truck center display. Nice to be able to watch what is going on. Often bring that up while charging.

For FORScan, I just went with wired one since it was the recommended reader and it needs to connect to the computer - not the phone.

You shouldn’t need it. Checking for codes should have been the first thing the dealer did.
