This reminded me of the situation you had recently with an insurance company wanting to total the truck rather than repair it...persistence can pay off sometimes.

Ford Motor Company does not have a single, publicly stated expiration timeframe for parts availability on discontinued models, but they operate under standard automotive industry standards and legal minimums. While common myths suggest a strict federal 10-year requirement, U.S. federal law actually focuses on a manufacturer's obligation to honor original factory warranties rather than keeping parts on shelves for a set number of years.
In practice, Ford manages discontinued vehicle support through several corporate policies and strategic initiatives:
Parts Availability Timeline
The 10-to-15-Year Standard: Ford typically maintains and supplies parts for 10 to 15 years after a model line is officially discontinued. For incredibly popular vehicles with massive user bases (such as the Ford Edge or sedan lines), production relationships with external suppliers often keep components available for 20 to 30+ years.

Shared Architecture Component Lifespans: If a part used in a discontinued vehicle is also integrated into newer, active models, Ford will continue manufacturing and stocking that part indefinitely. Conversely, components completely unique to a defunct model are discontinued much faster as sub-components become scarcer and more expensive to source.
Regulatory and Recall Obligations
Lifetime Safety Recalls: Discontinuation does not end Ford's safety, compliance, or emissions obligations. Ford is required by law to provide free safety recall services on discontinued models—such as the Fiesta, Focus, and Fusion—for the lifetime of the vehicle with no expiration date.

Interim Fix Policy: If an essential replacement part for a recall is backordered or unavailable for months, Ford’s policy authorizes local dealerships to install alternative temporary solutions (such as whole assembly replacements) or provide rental vehicle reimbursements at no cost to the owner.

Older Model Recommitment
Dealership Support Initiative: Ford has launched targeted initiatives to explicitly recommit to supporting older vehicles. Because the average vehicle on U.S. roads has aged significantly, Ford has expanded dealership technician training for discontinued vehicle lines and increased inventory allocation for older model maintenance parts.
Third-Party Supply Chains: Once official "Genuine Ford" parts stock runs low, Ford shifts consumer demand to their Motorcraft and Omnicraft lines. They also deliberately coordinate with major aftermarket manufacturers to ensure standard wear-and-tear items (like brakes, filters, and suspension parts) remain accessible.

This can happen even if the vehicle isn’t discontinued. A friend of mine had a new F350 that had a fuel pump problem a couple of years ago and it took 7 months to get all the parts they needed to fix it. He finally tracked down the last part himself by spending a day calling Ford dealers all over the country until he found it. Ford would have bought it back but this was shortly after Covid so there weren’t any comparable trucks available and the lead time on a custom order was crazy. Ford did give him a loaner and some cash for his trouble so if you are willing to keep it at least try to get some compensation.

Look. If you got a fleet of cars at home, fine, or if ford puts you in a loaner, even a shitty one - fine. But you can’t drive a car payment.

Ford F-150 Lightning
My new 2025 Ford Lightning Pro came complete with a coolant leak from the coolant valve. Ford Part # MU5Z-8C513-D. The truck has been at the local dealer for 2 months now....... This part is backordered indefinitely.
I have tried everything, filed a case with customer service and just received approval for buyback.
I really like this truck, and I bought a bunch of accessories for it.
I can't find another 2025 Pro and I am incredibly frustrated that this part is not available for a new truck.
The stress is taking a toll on me, especially since I am short a vehicle for our family.
This is a $ 150 part that is keeping a $ 50,000 truck from operating.
I have bought an A version (MU5Z-8C513-A) for this truck, but was told that it is not compatible.
There is also a B and C version apparently and I saw that the installed valve is a MU5Z-8C513-CD.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I checked all the local junkyards and used parts business without success.

🤕Bummer! Not very reassuring for other Lightning owners. This is my first and last Ford.

If I were in this situation, I think I would find it hard to turn down a buyback offer. I love my lightning, so I would put the money towards another, but I can understand why this experience might sour someone on the truck to the point of not wanting the same thing.

OP, I know you said you were looking for another PRO, but have you checked other trim levels? They say there are good deals to be had on the lightnings still on lots, maybe you could get a flash for a relatively small price difference.

Yeap, this is pretty much what I expected from Fords 10 year "commitment". Worth as much as the paper it was written on in my phone.

I.e. there is no paper in my phone that I'm writing this on.....
unfortunately your phone is a far more permanent record than any piece of paper! Data is stored forever!!!!!

This is the kind of stuff that's beyond ridiculous. Ford offers to buy a truck versus paying for the part. That says to me there is no 10 year supply of parts for the Lightning, OR that this isn't going to fix the problem going forward.
THIS is the shape of things to come. Those of us that want to keep these trucks long after the shut down of the line, for extended years will have a challenge getting parts. After market vendors will not be available like they are for other vehicles, as there are not a lot of lightnings per se. It will be death by a thousand cuts, so to speak.

Dear @Ford Motor Company,
Did this unsubstantial plastic assembly meet your "Built Ford Tough" design and manufacturing requirements?
Or is "Built Ford Tough" just a marketing gimmick to mislead owners into believing that we purchased a really tough truck?
You can answer here for all of us dedicated Lightning owners.
Thank you.

I was curious how A.I. would see this. Of course, the proprietary solution involves CANBUS, digital signaling to and from a gaggle? of sensors. The hacker in me says “yeah this info is somewhere“ but that proprietary gate gonna be a problem. My Neanderthal brain said “me thor…“. “Thor not need cabin heat”. ”Thor erect resistance fire in front seat”.

I make light of this but future hacks needed pronto are on the order of Apollo 13 shutting down systems to operate critical ones. Maybe that’s the hack for us mere mortals.

I wish you luck entering the corporate consumer hall of mirrors.

A.I. (Gemini) response below.

The purpose of the Ford Coolant Control Valve (MU5Z-8C513 series) is to act as an electronic fluid distributor that routes heated coolant between the vehicle's HVAC heater core for cabin heat and the high-voltage battery thermal management loops. [1]
While "MU5Z-8C513-CD" corresponds to a physical stamping or engineering part number suffix found on some factory units (such as the 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning), the official catalog service part number sequence is typically MU5Z-8C513-A or MU5Z-8C513-B depending on your exact model layout. [1, 2, 3]

Is it a unique part?
Yes, it is highly unique and proprietary.
  • Multi-Port Routing: It is not a standard, simple open/close valve. It is a multi-port diverter assembly that manages complex, multi-directional flow paths simultaneously. [1, 2, 3]
  • Electronic Integration: The valve is strictly managed by the vehicle’s central computer modules. It communicates data regarding internal flow position and relies on precise voltages to step its actuator.[1, 2]
  • Strict Revision Compatibility: Even among sub-variants of this part, revisions are not universally backward compatible. For instance, trying to swap a factory "CD" variant with an "A" catalog version on a 2025 truck will trigger compatibility flags or errors because the physical orientations or pinouts differ.[1]

Can its function be replaced by a series of valves?
Theoretically possible in plumbing, but functionally impossible in practice.
Plumbing a series of manual ball valves or generic 12V automotive solenoids to copy the routing paths would technically direct fluid, but the modification cannot work on the vehicle for several critical reasons:
  • CAN-bus / Module Communication: The vehicle’s computer continuously monitors the electrical resistance, position feedback, and current draw of the factory electronic valve. If you delete the factory assembly, the computer will instantly detect a missing or malfunctioning component. [1]
  • Immediate Fail-Safes: A missing valve signal triggers a cascade of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). On modern vehicles like the F-150 Lightning or E-Transit, this will force the vehicle into a protective "limp mode" or lock out the high-voltage battery system entirely to prevent thermal damage. [1]
  • Complex Logic Dynamics: The factory system doesn't just switch "on or off." It alters flow percentages dynamically based on ambient temperatures, battery cell health, and cabin climate commands. Standard series-valves cannot automate to this granular level safely. [1]
If you are dealing with a severe parts backorder or an immobilized vehicle due to this valve, your safest alternative is checking with large-scale component recyclers using your exact VIN, or utilizing official manufacturer escalation channels. [1, 2]

Makes me glad I have a lease and not a purchase. If this becomes a running theme then I'd want to move to something more repairable.

I really don’t understand all the @ing ford here. This dude is not the ceo, not in charge of supply chain, just a guy who either volunteered or was given a tertiary title to crowd source user feedback from current and perspective owners. I suspect he’s got another job that actually pays bills. @ all day, not sure it makes any difference.
