Just got out of a service appointment where the service person indicated that they turned the one pedal mode off because it causes the rear rotors to rust.

Is this really the case?

I was told the same thing after a mobile service to address a few open recalls.

First of all, 1 pedal vs 2 pedal makes ZERO difference in how the truck brakes. It will always use regen braking as much as it can. That means that that for reasonably normal driving, the friction brakes will only operate at the very end of the stop (below about 3 mph). So yes, the brakes on a Lightning don't get much use and it is use that keeps the rotors clean.
There are a couple things you can do to force the friction brakes to operate. Likely the best is to while at speed, shift into neutral and apply the brakes. Obviously do this in a location where you can safely drive in an abnormal state (empty road or parking lot for example).

What @K6CCC said...The techs are misleading you or are ignorant. Both drive modes result in almost no brake pad usage. Taking you off of 1PD and NOT informing you that you still need to shift to neutral in order to use the physical brakes under load is pretty negligent. (They still apply when you mash the brake, but that's overkill to just get the rust off.)

@Ford Motor Company You need to step up your tech training. Zero excuse for the customer to know more about how the vehicle operates than a service tech.

Make sure you brake hard enough to use the friction brakes periodically.

I learned this the hard way when my Chevy Volt didn't pass inspection. The rear rotors had rusted too badly from disuse.

Rust never sleeps.

If you leave your vehicle, literally any vehicle, motionless for extended periods then your rotors will rust and since the front brakes do most of the work, the rears will rust and wear faster.

I often worry about this happening, that's why I purposely stop a couple times a day, where the brake coach says about 90 percent. I'm not sure if that's enough friction, but I've never seen rust on my rotors in the 3 years I've owned my Lariat.

I used to exclusively drive 1PD but in the past 2 years, I drive in Sport mode 2PD and my brakes and rotors still looks like new.

Everyone needs to needs to hard brake for whatever reason from time to time (sudden stop in traffic someone doing something stupid, etc.). That will engage the disc brakes. As long as that applies to you, nothing to worry about. Use 1PD or 2PD, however you choose and make a hard brake occasionally. Problem solved.

Edit: With did autocorrect put in. tried to clean it up.

Ive heard this many times. I just recently turned on 1PD and love it. I do brake every once in a while and check my rotors visually from time to time.

Many posts on this. Simple trick - turn TCS fully off once every couple of weeks in good weather. This disables regen entirely, and a few normal stops will clean them right up.
Remember - TCS is off when you do this, so your 600 horsies are unbridled.

A firm brake at a freeway offramp while at speed will do it. If you watch your regen it will immediately peg. When you stop, your brake coach will report poor regen performance.
