I was concerned about bugs going into the radiator fins so I looked at my ‘99 F350 which has a similar open area in the lower part of the grill. The ‘99 is a little dinged up and could use a combing but for 23 years old it’s not bad. My concern now is how comparable are the fin materials and will the Lightning and MME hold up as well. We have mass migrations of various winged windshield splatterers. The snout nosed butterfly’s are the most prolific here. Lots of window screens wired to truck and P/U grills when they are on the move.

the shutters are actually probably the opposite of what you might initially think: they are there to open to allow the fan to bring in cooling air thru the radiator to cool the battery, MAINLY when the vehicle is parked, and either just arrived after a long drive, while charging at a DC Fast Charger, or while the vehicle is being charged overnight at home, etc. Otherwise, they are closed while driving since the moving air already provides cooling.

This is equipment on every trim level of the Lightning.
Hmm, I can see all this complexity in the low front may make adding a winch mount somewhat challenging.

Anyone have thoughts on cleaning in that radiator behind the shutters? I drive through a lot of grass and other things and noticed some build up in there.

Carefully vacuuming would be ideal. Rad blower guns are also available.

DO NOT use anything with high pressure, you will bend the fins.

Mine were remaining open on recent cool mornings - no remote start.

wondered as y’all did.

I closed them by hand and all is back to normal.

remote start on warm days, they are open with fan sucking In air.

just sharing what worked for me.
