This has to be a joke:

Roof mounted battery

F=ma dictates this battery will break free of most mounting hardware in a collision and send said battery in the direction of travel.

Safest place to be is in the Ford vehicle that used to have a reserve battery on the roof!

note: main battery is integrated into the frame and the entire truck moves with the main battery.

It could be a pretty good way to discourage people from crashing into you!

Yea, no one understands the patents of big companies anymore. I think it's just a way to keep the patent lawyers busy.

It’s called covering all the bases. It’s what smart companies (and individuals) do. As an inventor with 6 corporate patents, we claimed the moon and let the USPTO make the decision.
I’ll take 3 claims to block, Bob.

It's a smart move on Ford's part and most large companies take the same approach. So when someone designs a battery that weighs a fraction of the current weight, Ford has the ability to block it, use it, or license it out. Just hedging their bets for the future.

I worked for a large corporation for many years and they encouraged us heavily to submit patent applications for everything we created. They used their very large patent portfolio to defend against patent infringement claims from competitors and patent trolls. Sometimes they were used to show prior design of similar technology. Other times they were used to countersue where infringement went both ways and then settle with cross-licensing agreements.

It is just a patent, like a trailer with battery pack. To file a patent could avoid those patent trolls in future as filing fee is neglectable for Ford.
