AT&T outage affecting telematics??

I'm reading reports of cell phone service, particularly in the south and southeast of the nation experiencing issues.

The truck's built in mobile service uses AT&T. There is a nationwide outage affecting AT&T service. My truck and my ATT FirstNet cell phone had no service all morning.

Or receive OTA's as they are distributed, on the bright side of this incident, it's a timely issue to test the reliability of the WiFi communications in distributing updates. The CNN article had more useful information with a suggestion by AT&T that it's customers put their phones on a WiFi network if available to use WiFi calling.

That shouldn't be the case.

PaaK, i.e. using the phone as a key, should work just fine, as you approach the vehicle, because it's via Bluetooth.

Using the phone to lock, unlock, etc. should NOT work, unless you have PaaK setup and are within Bluetooth range.

Interesting here - my truck is in the garage, and should be connected to Wifi. I'm in the house with phone on Wifi and full internet (on the phone if I turn Wifi off I get "not connected to the internet" and only the SOS signal, not ATT at the top of the phone). I am checking my LVB battery a few times a day as I'm hoping overall it improves after having the 12v battery sensor replaced.

If the truck reliably used wifi, this process should still happen without cell service, but the truck won't update. The app spins and then stops.

This indicates that Ford can't find and wake the truck up via Wifi, only cellular. A major shortcoming. We already know that it won't start a SW download until you start it.

Further investigation - I went to the truck - it didn't wake up when I approached or after opening the door. This tells me my LVB SOC may have dropped again overnight. No reason it shouldn't wake up after opening the door.

To say the least - it does start after brake/push button and comes to life and connects to Wifi (although the app knew to tell me to drive to reconnect services). It will check for SW updates, but nothing will get the truck to update the app (still says last connected 3 hours ago) and the LVB SOC will not update Ford. So there are definitely certain processes that only work over the cell signals.

With full wifi on both truck and cell there are still communications that are nerfed.

My ATT phone is down all day, and truck can't connect with ford pass. It did remote start this morning, but it was on my home wifi network then.

I have checked VIN's on over a dozen vehicles today already and I had no issues pulling connected data on any of them including my own. That isn't to say no vehicle are affected, but so far, I have not found one that is told me connected data could not be accessed.

Absolutely, today was the first day my truck did not remote start from my FordPass command in over a year.

PaaK is definitely not supposed to require cell service. I routinely use it in places (Ski Belleayre, I'm looking at you...) where there's no cell service or Wi-Fi in the parking lots.

agreed, this was the first time it’s failed for me so it likely was a coincidence, just wanted to throw it out to the world to see if anyone else had the problem. Seems it was a me problem.
