Coming from a Model Y, talk me in/out of a Lightning

My wife has a Y and I have a gas F150 Lariat. The lightning prices seem good right now so I'm considering pulling the trigger on a lariat lightning. Anything I should know since I'm coming from the world of Tesla?

You own an EV and an F-150. The information you seek is already in you. You just need to let yourself in.
I only know the tesla side of EV ownership, so I'm looking for advice from someone who ideally has Tesla and Ford Lightning firsthand experience.

I just bought a Platinum for 58k with 2500 miles on it, I have been looking for a year and the deals are about as good as it gets right now

I have a model Y and a Lightning Lariat. You will be disappointed with the Ford software in general. The navigation stinks, the road trip charging experience is sketchy and takes a lot more planning than Tesla. Only SOME Tesla chargers are open to the Ford. The DC charging speeds are slow, way below the competition. The phone app is not very useful. As can be expected, it uses about twice the energy as the model Y.

On the plus side, it is a great truck, just like a regular F150. Real world range is a tick better than the model Y if you keep it below 75.

I bought the Lightning because you can get it a good deal on them. For an extended range at $60k, it can't be beat.

In regards to light pickup trucks, the F150 Lighting is the BEST pickup I have ever owned. Its Ford's latest generation PLUS its an EV. Its actually a pretty good EV for its generation. However, as mentioned, its 400v, so will be slower DC charging than 800v EV's.

Going to push back on the issue of finding fast charging that another poster mentioned. Easy enough using the Tesla app, or ABRP, or Plugshare. And how often do you even plan to roadtrip? As an EV owner, you already know that most charging happens at home.

The software, while not Tesla level, is as good as any other Ford. So upgrading from an older F150 ICE truck, the software and navigation will be pretty much the same.

No one needs to tell you anything, just combine those two and you know what you have except with the F-150 software and plush suspension.

Tesla is a starter EV
Ford is for those who know the ins and outs of EVs

One thing you will realize is that more than 1/2 of what you like about your Tesla is more about it being an EV than about it being a Tesla. The Ford Lightning will have all those same advantages - acceleration, torque, low "fuel" cost, convenience of home charging, no fumes, quiet, easy to drive, instant heat.

I currently own both a Y and a Lightning. If I were making the decision again I would have both in my driveway. The Tesla software is years ahead of Ford, but the Ford stuff is roughly similar to your current F-150 so it will feel normal to you. The Lightning is very fast, very comfortable, quiet, can haul a load of lumber, and can tow my 7000 pound boat the 20 miles I need it to.

The Y is about twice as efficient, so make those calculations compared to your electric rates and make sure it pencils out to go EV vs ICE. My grid rate is 36.3 cents per kWh, so I’d only need to get 14.9 mpg in an ICE to cost less than EV. If your grid rate is cheap then the EV is a no brainer.

Here’s my 2 cents as a Florida boy who owns both a Tesla and a Lightning.ER.

Having a Tesla and a Lightning is a great combination. If I “lost” my Lightning I would be looking for lightly used 2022-2023 Lariat or Platinum to replace it Like this one https://www.autonationfordstpetersb...ightning-d2cbb82fac181b91072054cb9a13d452.htm

Our Teslas routinely get 3.6 miles/kw
our Lightning gets 2.1 Miles/kw.

We burn 45% of battery power to go the 125 miles between our Bradenton house and our Ft Drum cabin. Same percentage used but kWhs used is greater with the Lightning.

The Lightning takes 40% longer to charge at home for that trip using our Tesla Wall connector and uses 40% more electricity. At FPL rate of 13 cents/kwh it’s much cheaper than gas.

The Tesla is better around town in parking lots.
The Tesla software is much better
If I’m going to someplace with a parking lot I choose my Tesla. All other times I prefer my Lightning.

I use Apple CarPlay Google maps with the Lightning

2023 Lightning Lariat. Not all features **work on new Lightnings.
Ride is SMOOOOTH and comfortable.
Truck is fast
Adaptive cruise works well
Blue cruise on highways works well
we travel with 2 powered coolers on the 2 hour trip between houses. One cooler in the Frunk set to -2dF and another in the truck bed set to 35dF plugged into the 120vac outlets
Phone as a Key works to unlock truck and drive it Lariat and Platinum
If you don’t have key with me I can open door with keypad and start the trunk with a password.
My 23 Lariat doesn’t have walk away lock as my Teslas do.

Had a '21 MY. Have a '22 Lightning Lariat ER. The Lightning drives like a dream compared to the MY. Yes the software is not as fun as our Rivian or Tesla but still decent. OTAs happen less frequently than Rivian or Tesla but we just got BlueCruise 1.4 finally.

Not sure about the PAAK being bad. Works great on our iPhones. The key fobs stay in the kitchen drawer unless we are on a long road trip.

Efficiency is the biggest problem with any EV truck.

Ford PAAK phone as a key is not as good as Tesla due you still have to carry around bulky FOB.
I disagree. I have never taken the fob anywhere with me and have owned the truck for two years now. PaaK works fine.

Now you don't get the Key cards that you get with Teslas if that's what you're referring to but also don't think they are needed.

unless you want to haul a 20 foot trailer, then you better stick with the gas truck.
Hauls a 20ft trailer just fine :) I wouldn’t try to take it across country, but in town I would say it pulls it better than an ICE truck. Roughly 10k and 25ft length.

Mine does not lock on walk away. I always use the two button keypad to lock. Your PaaK works on walk away? 23 Lariat ER.

Sounds like you are coming from gas F150. I think you’ll like it. If you were only Tesla and had only been Tesla for 5+ years then you would feel like you were going back 10 years. If you had never had a Tesla you would think the software was great and the app was amazing and would be wowed by Carplay. Most of my daily driving is in the city. I almost always take the Y. The sound system is 10x better, it has FSD, I find the seats more comfortable, the UI is better and faster, it has sentry and remote view, it’s easier to park, it uses less energy and does all but lumber runs. The Lightning gets used when we go on trips (more comfortable for more people and pets), I need to tow , do truck stuff or need 120/240 somewhere that does not have it. My only trade would be if the Cybertruck did both things better and I could have just one. It can’t. The Y is easier in town and the Lightning carries more stuff with a much larger frunk and passenger area.
