I have been poking around the Tesla app, PlugShare, ABRP, and trying to figure out how to filter/search for the V4 Tesla superchargers with the longer charging cables. Does anyone know how to do that?

I find that the older superchargers with the shorter cables are a pain for parking unless it is a pull-through style station. Being able to search for the longer cable chargers or pull-through style with the charger alongside the vehicle instead of at the end would be great.

And if there is a thread already on this topic, please link me through. I searched and did not find any.

The only trick I know of is look at the available power. If it's a V4 it is generally 350KW. You can filter for that in PlugShare (I set a range for 300 - 350KW). You can also filter for only Tesla. Wala, Tesla V4 chargers only. Just confirmed, you can do that filtering both on the website and the phone app.

Thank you. I had not thought about filtering for charge speed. Found a few Tesla with speeds over 300 kW on my route, and one had pictures showing the longer cable cabinets.

There are a very few V4 locations. Maybe 1 or 2.
There are some V3 locations with the longer cables. No filter for those.

At the short cable locations, unless there is a bollard, simply nose between two chargers. You occupy 2 spaces exactly as Tesla specifies.

Nosing in close between two chargers is what I have been doing. But you have to get really close, and feel like a bit of a dick taking up two slots. But some times that is unavoidable, even when the cabinet is on the side since the Ford charge door is still on the "wrong" side of the vehicle. Would be great if all cabinets were on the side of the stall or had longer cables. Not sure if Tesla is planning to make those changes.

Yep, I understand exactly how you feel. Been dealing with that myself since I bought the truck. If they’d only made the damn cable a few inches longer it would have been a major help.

I rarely 'public' charge, but I was checking out the phone App (iPhone) this morning since I had heard there were enhancements. There is a filter for 'pull through' and taller spaces.

The Tesla places along the long route I often take are not available to us. Is that some technical limitation or just Elon being stingy?

You are doing exactly what Tesla tells you to...

For the most part, it's technical. Tesla is making money from us at SuperChargers, it would make little sense to restrict that cash cow. As I understand it, the V1 and V2 SuperChargers have some technical limitation where they can not be made to work with non Tesla vehicles. V3 SuperChargers require firmware and provisioning changes. V4 SuperChargers (actually V3.5) are the same deal as V3.

I'm sure there is some priority list inside Tesla of which V3 stations to update, but no info on what that list is. And there are likely locations that are constantly busy that a decision has been made to keep them Tesla only simply so their own customers can use them - at least until another station is built.

Try the Supercharger a North Myrtle Beach. Someone planted bushes between the chargers and getting close enough between chargers means you have to literally crush the nose into those bushes.

But I shouldn't complain. I didn't buy an EV until I could charge at Superchargers. They are cheaper, more reliable and more numerous than any other charger system by far. Just look to the Tesla app for compatibility. A Better Route Planner also specifies their compatibility with other brands though 250KW and above always are. Realistically Tesla has done more for EV adoption in the US, maybe the world than any other company. Their foresight in establishing a charging infrastructure is a big part of it.

At first, I was critical of their system but after 10,000+ mi, much of it road tripping, I use them almost exclusively.

Absolutely incorrect. As posted many times, SOME Tesla chargers (V3, V3.5, V4) are reserved by Tesla for Tesla vehicles only, in congested areas. It is not an insignificant number that non-Tesla are prohibited from using, I have seen "20%" mentioned in places.

Thanks, I have never encountered that situation but my area of road tripping so far is limited to TN, VA, NC, PA, MD, NJ, NY and CT. Does the Tesla app tell you of a 250+KW charger when limited to Tesla only?

If you have setup the Tesla app to know you are driving a Lightning, the Tesla App will not even show you locations that are Tesla only. The current version of the Ford app will show a non-compatible location as just a black circle with a bar through it. If you select it, the Ford app will show the name of the charger with a note of "Incompatible Charger". And if you look it up on PlugShare.com, it will specifically state that it is either "Tesla only" or "Open to Non-Tesla".
