Ford Won't Give Me the Pro Charger 80A

If I bought a new one today, I'd sell the free unit and get a Gen1 Tesla that's capable of 80A and get adapters. If the industry keeps trending away from CCS and toward NACS, then your future proof.

That math changes if you want to hedge against whole home backup systems.

Thanks everyone. I'll be sure to keep an eye out on these other options. The good news is that Cloninger Ford down in Hickory, NC, came through for me and swapped out the 48a charger for the Pro one they told me I'd get. It took a while, but I've got my QMerit installer lined up in a couple of weeks to get it hooked up.

While we had a few bumps, I'm grateful to the team down there for getting me everything they told me I'd have as best they could.

If you don't plan on using HIS, you may regret swapping the small light cable and connector of the 48A charger to the bigger, heavier Pro. I sold my FCSP and got a 48A charger. Smaller box on wall, lighter cable, and didn't have the bulkier CCS-1 connector.

It has been reported that now Ford may be giving out the Emporia 48A charger which is a great unit.

That Emporia is a very high quality unit. Kinda surprised it's so inexpensive.

SunRun royally screwed up when I bought my truck and sent me two CSPs. Sold one on eBay and bought an Emporia. Installed a CSP at my house and the Emporia at a family members house. Worked out great.

I did the same. Sold my free FCSP and bought acTesla Wall Connector. I now have the UNIVERSAL Wall Connector installed at both my house and my cabin.

The Universal works well for us with its built in either J1772 or NACS plug, since we have Tesla’s and Ford’s.

My truck was ordered with the optional power cord kit so it's already J1772/CCS and then has the NACS adapter I can pop onto it also. So I suppose I'll just keep the free Ford unit, if I ever get it, and if the wife gets some kind of EV car one day we'll be alright.

Note if your wife gets a plug-in hybrid that only has a J1772 port, you will not be able to use the FCSP since it has the CCS-1 head. You can get yet another bulky adapter. Or just get rid of the FCSP and buy a charger with the svelte J1772 connector (or the Tesla universal).

Note that if you just want home backup, it works perfectly fine to run a cord from the pro power 30A outlet in the bed. There is a little complication involving the GFCI but nothing that an electrician can’t figure out (see threads on the topic).

The only advantage of the home integration system is that you get an automatic transfer if the power goes out while your truck is plugged in. I believe that it is also limited to supply 30A of power to the house (based on other threads here). It saves you the hassle of finding the cord and plugging it in, possibly in the dark, but at a fairly large cost in money and complexity. The advantage of using a generator plug on the house side is that you can use it with other devices - like generators or other trucks (one of whch, ahem, supplies 50A). Future buyers will be more impressed by a standard generator plug than a Ford specific device.

This is the way. My electrician is installing a HIS at someone else’s home and it’s been a 9 month ordeal. I said no thanks and had him install a 30 amp generator plug with an interlock on my panel. I can power my whole place (well pump, heat pump water heater, lights, fridge, and all three heat pump mini-splits. Cost to install the gen box and interlock was $700, and the cable to the truck sits in a nice box next to the gen box.

Yeah, that one. It's a monstrosity . Why go all though all that. Just sell the FSCP and get a normal sized J1332 or NACS and eliminate the red box part.

The Ford supplied NACS adaptor is only for Tesla Super Chargers, not home chargers. It your wife gets a EV on day with a Tesla NACS connection that adaptor will not work for home charging.
