Keep hands on steering wheel warning

My ‘25 Lariat has started a new (to me) annoying behavior. While I’m driving manually — no Blue Cruise or any cruise control active — with both hands on the steering wheel, I’ll get the “Keep hands on steering wheel” warning message. Why?? I’m physically, actually driving the truck. Obviously, my hands are on the wheel.

Yes. I have gotten that message often myself since day 1. So not new behaviour. My wheel alignment is so good that I don't need a lot of steering input to go straight... But then the warning comes up and I have to jerk it. Too much of good I guess. Add that on the list of things to fix. (ie... if no assistance features are on, don't assist me and leave me alone)

Took me a LONG time to figure out all the settings on mine. There's lane keeping, then there's lane centering, and apparently they aren't the same. Go into your infotainment screen settings and turn off which ever one is listed in there. That should fix it.

Then, if you want to fix it when you use the cruise control, you have to push the button on the steering wheel to disable lane keeping/centering.

Yeah my truck does it as well if the road is smooth (rare in Michigan) because on a smooth road I am holding the steering wheel but not applying a torque.

Happens with or without cruise.

Both lane keeping and lane centering are in the screens...

I don't understand the logic if it's true that this is because of lane centering/keeping. So because the truck is going straight and between the lines, I need to be warned to keep my hands on the wheel. The point of those features is an extra safety net. Not to tell me I am driving straight wrong.

it's an option. you can select the level of alert. I have mine set to it merely vibrates the steering wheel if I drift off center

I'll go in the settings and take another look. I also get the vibrate if I drift off center. That is what I thought the feature did. Not sure why anyone would want a specific option to be nagged that their hands are not on the wheel. If you need your truck to remind you of this all the time, maybe driving is not for you. Anyway, thanks for letting us know there is a way to turn that off.

as I said, it's an option. another option is to turn it off look under driver assist - lane keeping and/or lane centering

That makes sense that it’s the lane whatver setting. I’ll probably keep it on and live with the annoyance.

I dont believe the alert is related to either of those. Maybe lane keeping, but I feel like it isnt. I can see it for lane centering since some trucks with lane centering (poor man's blusecruise) lack the eye detection software and could drive for hours with someone asleep. That said even I get the alert and ny Pro lacks lane centering.

I think its just, "there", and built in.

I had the exact same impression as you did prior to this thread. I thought it was just there but I am being told there is a setting to shut this off, so how I can't refute that. I haven't had a chance to verify the setting and then test it to see if it relates to what we are talking about. Like you, I don't get what this has to do with lane centering. If true, this is the exact opposite of what the function is supposed to do. I want to be notified when I veer off the lane (which it does by vibrating) not be notified that "you can't possibly be actually driving, we are between the lines going way to straight... Put your hands back on the wheel". If there is a setting for this, it should be its own thing and not tied to lane centering.

FERN is correct: safety alerts are BUILT IN to the truck's normal operating status, no matter how you are driving, as to whether you are using LK or LC or CC or BC, or all of them simultaneously. If the truck 'thinks' you are not holding the wheel, it WILL give you the alert, always. Safety first.

Your issue is you have Lane Centering Keeping turned on (green icon circled below). It is automatically turned on now when you turn on cruise AND it stays on across restarts and cruise on/off.

The only way to turn it off is to press the button on the steering wheel.

The sensing mechanism doesn’t use touch but instead senses slight torque movements to determine if your hands are on the wheel. Bugs the crap out of me too and it is frustrating.

I have on my to-do list to check out the "ankle weight" options on the forums here to dissuade Sparky from thinking I'm not driving safely or distracted. What I've found driving long stretches w/o BlueCruise available is to keep a slight downward pressure on the right side of the wheel which eliminates these on-screen nags.

For the record, I love all the assistive features available and don't want to turn them off at all. Anything that helps us to be safer drivers barreling down the road in giant boxes of death. The requirement for a tiny bit of torque on the wheel every 10 seconds to satisfy our trucks that we are driving with attentiveness is poor design though.

That's actually a LANE KEEPING button on the wheel - at least on my truck, which did NOT come with Adaptive cruise and Lane Centering.
