You should be fine with an SR. The battery degradation concern of the smaller battery is mitigated somewhat by the fact that it‘s an LFP battery.
When did Ford use an LFP battery on the standard range lightning?
Thanks in advance

No 2022-2025 Lightning has an LFP. Was mentioned as an mid-year option for 2024 but never materialized.

I went ER because of the flexibility. What about those unexpected trips that pop up and you need to make quickly? Or what if you occasionally do want to go on a longer drive? My trip to work is 40 miles round trip daily, but to me *potential* range is everything. Life with EV is already a huge adjustment. Why make it worse by limiting your range with the small battery?

To answer your question regarding engine swaps vs battery swap: Yes, they are comparable from a current cost point. However, batteries are getting less expensive every year and motors are getting more expensive. However would have thought. 🤷‍♂️

Hi new to everything. New to forums, looking to be new to EV’s. Currently have a 2025 Ram1500 bighorn hurricane. Came from a 2016 ram1500 eco diesel that got 202k miles in 8 years.
I am considering 2024 or 2023 XLT SR or Lariat ER. I drive 100 miles a day for work mostly highway. 50 miles at 70 mph, 40 miles at 60 mph and then 10 miles of 35-40 mph. I plan on keeping the truck for 10 years hopefully and usually put 22k-25k miles on it a year. I prefer the non large screen of the XLT over the massive vertical one but also want rear sliding window so that leaves me with the large screen lariat from my research.
My internal debate with the SR vs ER is battery degradation over the 10 years but also some what range anxiety being new to EV. SR look to be $10K -$12k cheaper but really with going from my current Ram ( 22mpg) i will make that price back in a couple years. I also live in south florida and FPL has 30 month unlimited charging off peak so electric is almost free. Has anyone had experience with the fpl program. Has anyone gotten the ER and said man I wish I just got the SR?
Im looking at a couple different options but for the most part 2023-2024 Lariat ER gold certifed 10-15k miles there around $56-$58k is that about right? Is one year better or more sought after than the other? They also show as commercial vehicle use on carfax from Michigan any concerns with that?
Thank you for any help
Sean
I paid $60k for a new 2025 Flash with ER and ppob. It's one trim below Lariat.

You won't qualify for the $7500 tax credit with a used vehicle.

The biggest question is how is charging in your location and the paths to the places you will take it. If you have great charging infrastructure do the SR and skip the ER. I know as an ER owner, I could have lived with the SR for most of our adventures, but a 1/3 of Oregon has no chargers so those occasional times it is needed, or you avoid that area.

When I bought mine it was going to be “my only car” so I spend the money for the ER. Fast forward two years and well the SR would have been the more economical answer since my house hold has two Model 3 for more road trips. So my Lightning gets to go on the winter/camping adventures and the ER battery is nice, but could have worked around it for those few times.

So unless you need it regularly, go SR and save the money.

Bottom line…. ER battery offers more flexibility.
Better Cold weather range
Better inclimate weather range
Better interstate (high speed) range
Better towing range
Better longevity
Better power
Better resale value
Compound multiple adverse conditions and the fact you only charge to 80-90 % routinely , the extra capacity of the ER is worth it .
And you’re gonna like driving it better than any previous truck,
So you may drive it more.!

btw, there is no LFP Lightning

As another Florida Owner, since your looking used, i would just look for a good deal on a 2022, i recently switched from daily driving a Tesla Model Y on lease to the 2022 Ford Lightning ER i bought for 34k w/54k miles 4 months ago. Most of the cheaper used Lightnings are SR, but it was only 2k more for the ER at the time i was purchasing. The Dealer price on the truck was 42k advertised, i just went back and forth emailing different dealerships that had them in their inventory and leveraged the prices others quoted me and ended up talking them down to 34k on the truck.

ER vs SR: Honestly i don't really think its needed, i drive 40 miles (80 miles) 2-3x a week to the office and it averages between 25-28% usage for the day, so for you it should be around 35-40% battery usage for your trip.

Lariat vs other models: Personally i went Lariat, because i wanted the Phone as key function, but truly hate the moon roof on the lariat. The dealership i bought the truck from replaced the gasket on it the first week i bought it due to leaks during our crazy hard storms we get here in Florida, but even after that i couldnt get it to not leak on the super heavy storms. I had 2 different dealerships look at it and they couldn't fix the issue completely to date. I know its designed to let water run through the channels on purpose, but we get such crazy hard rain storms in Florida that the rails would backup not being able to drain quick enough and overflow into the truck. This is not the case on a normal storm, only occured on the heavy rain storms. I have personally taken things apart and traced the drains and cleaned them out the best they can, they just cant keep up. I have since "Fixed" the issue by ordering a roll of cheap PPF film and just placed a section over the entire moonroof, sealing it from the outside and its no longer an issue.

Additional feedback: When i was test driving different used trucks, i found the SR models always felt a little more nimble, didn't feel as heavy and floaty as the ER. I noticed this between brand new and used SR/ER models.

Overall I love the purchase i made outside the issues with the moonroof.

One other thing, if you want pro power onboard, I was told you have to get the ER in order to get the 9.6k and 240v outlet in the bed.

Whether or not that's true is uncertain, I opted for the ER just for the ppob so I can use it to power my folx house after a storm, living in hurricane alley and all that, it was warranted.

That's not accurate.

on my 2023 Standard range pro, I have pro-power 9.6KW (with the 240v outlet in the bed among other things) :)

Wow… I thought it happened. It was announced for both the Lightning and Mach-E, and I know it happened on the Mach-E.
Probably the low level of Lightning sales vs forecast resulted in a glut of batteries to use up. Thanks for correcting me.

I have a Lariat ER in South Florida….the ventilated seats are worth it and I’d choose one again. Especially if I had to commute 100 miles each day and had that much time to enjoy the comforts of a higher trim.

The FPL program is awesome. They install a Wallbox charger and it charges at 40 Amps, so you should have no problem recharging your truck enough each night. The charger seems high quality, never overheated, and always kicks on at 9pm to start charging even if you plug it in earlier. Keep in mind off peak hours are different in the winter.

I already had a circuit installed so I did the $31/month program. Depending on how complex/expensive the wiring run is, it might make sense to have the circuit installed ahead of time to save the extra $7/month. If you are set on buying a Lighting, I would sign up for the program now. FPL seems to only have a few installers scattered around Florida, so I had to wait several weeks after signing up before the installer was going to be in my area to do the install. Enjoy the new truck, I’m coming up on 27,000 miles over two years and it’s been a great vehicle.

Most likely due to the trim level, being the Pro it was meant for job sites thus having the 240v and SR battery where other trims like XLT, Flash, Lariat, Platinum are geared towards the general public.

Or I was lied to, lol.

Just another opinion. In a few days I will be six months into my 2024 ER Lightning Flash. I just hit 9K miles so doing just over 1500 miles per month or 18K (or a little over per year). For my daily commute, the SR would be no issue at all as it is 52 miles round trip. Like you, in the morning I am ahead of most of the traffic, but going home is slow and go so I get better mileage driving home. I average about 18% per day. However, I did not even consider a SR as I do a fair amount of odd driving up to mountain top 2 way radio sites and some of those are truly in the middle of nowhere. And although this is the Los Angeles area where you can hardly throw a rock without hitting a charge station, there are places out in the southwest deserts that are charging deserts in addition to physical deserts.
Also, since you are in hurricane central and may want to keep you home powered for extended periods of time, the larger battery has an advantage there too. Get the 9.6KW Pro Power On Board.
